GMC is still around because of their huge commercial market; the civilian product line of GMC is just an added bonus for making more money.

Well those are some killer examples of badging. One person made a good point about the only benefit of badging that everyone takes advantage of, PARTS AVAILIBLITY. Mazda is pretty much owned by Ford now. The B-series pickups are the same thing as a ranger to a t, except for the emblems and grill. Other than that it's the same truck as the ranger is. Ford is trying to get away from badging but they still got a little ways to go. GM basicly has done nothing but badging and the new Volt is a prime example. All the Volt really is an electric version of the Malibu. Toyota is starting to make the same mistakes that GM did just a shade before things went down hill and ended up taking a bailout. Chrysler hasn't been the same since the pony wars died down for a good number of years. The Neon was really a breath of fresh air during the mid 90's. In it's later years basicly it became the poor man's version of an Mitsubishi Eclipse. Both have used the same engines for years at that point.

Badging has been around for as long as cars have been around. Take a look at any car from the 20's and 30's. There really isn't that much of a difference at all. May not be badging by definition, but the concept is there.

Hell, Ford had badging within their own company with the F100 and the F150 from 1975-1983. The only thing that separated the F150 and the F100 were the badges, and the suspension, and in some cases the braking equipment.

I don't know why badging is made into such a big deal, it's been around forever.

Ford isn't getting away from it at all, even with the demise of Mercury.

Ford and Lincolns current lineup are almost the exact same thing.

The MKS and Taurus,

The Town Car and crown vic,

The Navigator and Expedition,

The MKX and Edge,

And the list goes on. I love the FoMoCo, but they suck at this.

I meant in theory dude. In their minds, they are far from it but in actuality they're still doing it. That's what I meant to say.

That's what GM said it was basicly. It just has alot more technology in it.

The point is that we all agree that badging has done more harm than good and they can't seem to get away from it. Even though they think and believe that they have, when that is clearly not the case.

When it becomes less profitable for an automaker to build unique models from the ground up, they re-badge models. It's their job to make a profit. It's how they stay in business and we get vehicles to buy. That's one way they do it. We have fewer choices. That's the way it is. Get over it.

If you know how to run a car company better, apply at Ford. The job paid about $33 Million after taxes last year.

If every vehicle made only used parts designed for it and only it the cost to produse it and repair would be so high no one could afford them. The multi billion dollar a year aftermarket would also die without badging. Look at ranger base vehicle lift kits. Up to 97 there were a had full of vehicles made on the same platform. Making lifts more common. 98 and on was just the ranger b series and explorer for a few years before body change. Superlift us the only newer lift still avaliable for them and the explorer guys are left with nothing
