Default 2011 2.3L Auto hangs in 3rd with a load or uphill?

I drive a 2011 2.3L (Auto) Supercab which I love dearly. That said it's seems to have a somewhat annoying characteristic with the way the automatic shifts.

Basically I only notice this when I have any sort of weight along in the truck, say 500 or more pounds in the box. Everything is great if my truck is on level ground. If I'm merging onto a freeway or climbing a slight hill the auto hangs in 3rd gear until the ground is either level or downhill, or I let up on the accelerator.

What gives? Is this normal for this truck or does it sounds like something is wrong? I was embarrassed because I had a buddy in my truck who owns a Tacoma. I went to get on the freeway where the on-ramp starts from a slight uphill than curves and drops down to get on the freeway.

My buddy was like "Hey what’s up with your truck shouldn't it shift by now" In the trucks defense it was loaded down 6-700 lbs or slightly more, two adults, slightly uphill into a headwind on a windy day. Truck stayed in 3rd gear until I basically let up on the throttle, I was not flooring it.

Mine does the same thing so I say it's normal for our little 4 bangers. The computer won't let the trans shift while under load like climbing a hill. Letting off the gas will allow it to shift but then you'll loose speed if you haven't topped the hill due to shifting early.

Giving more gas while going up a hill will give a small gain in mph but at a higher engine rpm and waste gas. When going up a hill I just keep a constant rpm around 2200 and let the engine work to get us over the hill. Then it will shift on it's on once the load lessens up.

For fun have your cruise set and go up some hills. You'll see your engine rpm's go way up into the 3000 rpm trying to maintain your set speed.

your 2.3 has something like 143 HP and 157 lb of torque (IIRC), with your truck being under a load of almost a 1000 pounds (cargo and human weight) I would expect this, its just the engine huffing over the hill so the tranny has kick down for the extra torwue and HP needed (4 bangers get their torque in the mid 4000 RPM usually and their HP in the early 5,000 RPM) I wouldnt worry, its not a 4L

Mine does the same thing too and I like it. When I tow my trailer I don't get any lugging after a shift.

my 4.0 does it going up a steep hill, i actually like it, this truck doesnt "hunt" for gears all the time.
