Default Baby seat in a SuperCab (Non x4 door model)

Ok guys, I'm looking to free up some cash because we are buying a home. This means I'm selling my 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid (It's the only vehicle I own that I can get out of free & clear) That said I would be left giving my 2011 Subaru to my wife for commuter duty. Not worried as it gets 32-34 MPG on the highway. That said I would be left using my Ranger to shuttle a 2 1/2 year old boy and possibly a newborn roughly 2 miles to daycare daily.

I know the Ranger is not recommended for this sort of thing, but it might be my only option. I've read the owner’s manual extensively and all it says is to never use this vehicle to carry an infant seat or any kind of car seat, yet Ford went so far to install the latch point on the front pass seat and install an automatic SRS off as well.

I've also seen on two occasions’ two different women driving supercab Rangers with two kiddie seats in them, one kid was in a car seat up front, and one in some sort of booster in the rear. Does anyone do this or can shed any light on the matter. Again I don't need a lecture on doing this it may be my only option right now, just looking to see if this can be done with a Ranger. I know I should have got a crew cab Taco or something but didn't want the huge gas bill or ridiculous cost to buy one.

Booster seats in the back seems like a terrible idea.

I know it does, but can it be done? If I could magically afford a crew cab F-150 that could net 30 mpgs I would go that route, this is the rig I have to work with.

IIHS and NHTSA don't rate the rear seat safety on Rangers because of the sideways position. Do you have a bench or buckets up front? Otherwise I'd just suggest putting the Subie on taxi duty over the Ranger.

yes it can be done.. should it be done.. probably not but you gotta go with what youve got.. just be extra careful about how you secure it and make sure that airbag is off. and the booster in the back is not necessary.. those seats are about as safe as you can get. The only reason for boosters is to get the seatbelt in the right position. The rear seats of a ranger wont have that kind of problem due to how they are designed. Like i said before.. just be extra careful..

I brought my daughter home in my 98 2wd reg cab. The wife was freaking out but we had to do it. I feel safe having a car seat up front. Air bag off of course. Now my daughter is 5 and sometimes when we have to take the ranger she will sit in the back with the booster seat. But most of the time we use the expedition. I feel comfortable when they are old enough for a booster, I would not put the rear facing car seat for infants in the rear tho.

I disagree Jeff and this is no stab at you or your comment I agree totally that it shouldnt be done, but to do it anyways is putting your child at risk... those seats are designed to fold up and I doubt that under a severe impact that the baby and seat will be heavy enough to prevent those seats from folding up there causing an aggravated injury to your kid.... you cant put a price on your kid's safety... I would suggest either trading your brand new ford ranger for perhaps a used small truck like perhaps a 4 door colorado or s10 or dakota (yuck, but at least its has a real backseat). I would never consider putting child under the age of 9-10 years old back there, unless its my sister in-law, in that case she can hybernate back there lol
