Traded my 92 for an 89 Ranger
Sounds simple enough, but wait, it gets better.
I have owned the 92 Ranger with 2.3L 5sp 4x2 for several years. I started to look around these past couple of weeks for a late 90's to early 2000 ranger. I happened to call Hertz car sales and spoke with a sales person and informed him what I was looking for. On Saturday 28th, I got a call from the General manager and asked if I might be interested in a recent trade-in. The ranger was an 89 with 2.9L 4x4 and ext cab. He assured me it was clean and had low mileage...ok, about this time I was feeling the pinch of the hook in my lip. I decided, what the hell, might just as well check it out.
I found a 1989 Ranger that was not only immaculate on the outside, but the same on the inside. Judging from the condition I was blown away when I saw the odometer reading of 18,153mi. According to the Manager, this vehicle was owned by an older couple that traded it and two other vehicles in on a never car. They had owned this truck since it was new, garaged and (get this) driven once or twice a month to haul their garbage to the dump. It sat the rest of the time.
I inspected the undercarriage and could find no evidence of any off road use. There were numerous leaks of transmission fluid/power steering fluid and a rubber brake line. Upon inspection these were the result of deterioration and I am sure gasket shrinkage. The dealer said he would have his shop do a 180pt. inspection and make repairs to address the leaks.
I know $5595 was high for a 89, but with a $1000 trade in on my vehicle as well as the shop replacing/repairing the lines, I do not think I went wrong and will provide pictures when I pick it up this week. What is your opinion on this.
