Default need help making my ranger faster :(

Ok, i have a 2000 ford ranger 4.0 4x4 (stock everything) it has 123,345 miles on it (its been in the family 10 yrs). i had the transmission rebuilt on it cause the reverse quit working and now it wont start in park. i have to put it in neutral to start it but thats a whole other story that i don't want to side track you guys with. When i get back from my training i'd like to put a new motor in it but when i do so i want to get some power out of it cause its really hard to pass people and i'm tired of it being slow. i really dont want to get another vehicle because i have become attached to him (my ranger) so i was wondering what i should do to upgrade and get some more power. im not completely mechanically inclined but i do know some stuff from my ex who worked on mustangs but thats a whole different bread of vehicle. if advice can be offered i would appreciate it. thanks ^_^

i bet a full tune up on the motor would really help get some ponies back. if a 4.0 seems slow, don't get in my 3.0

well i think because of the transmission it doesnt shift as good so i baby it all the time cause i dont have a lot of money on hand to get the transmission fixed if it decides to take a crap and i cant get to work but i mean when im trying to pass someone it takes its time. it kind of reminds me of the little engine that could. i havent timed it or anything.

you could always find a newer 4.0 and swap that in. the SOHC 4.0 puts the older ones to shame.
