I have a 1999 Ford Ranger 4x4 with a rotted rear frame, to the point that behind the rear wheels it is almost broken in two. I was thinking of finding a rust free frame in Cali and cutting off the last few feet of the rear section to weld onto the existing frame where not rotted. I am trying to figure out if the frames are the same for the 4x4 and standard truck though since most west coast rangers appear to be 2wd.

welding a partial frame to another partial frame is not safe. (or legal, I think)
think about it, when a vehicle is in an accident and the frame is broken, they "junk" the vehicle
If I'm wrong, someone will chime in.

i have seen it done. if you do it right and know what the hell you are doing it can be just as strong as the frame was from the factory. But dont attempt it unless you are an accomplished welder.

LOL. They dont junk frames 90% of the time. They straighten them. My shop is a professional frame straightening shop. Also, if you do end up splicing the frame, Cut the frame at a 45 degree angle. It strengthens it. Also, plate over where you welded and yuo'll be fine. Frames are the same. Only difference between standard and auto is the tranny crossmember.
