Exclamation Tranny Prob? HELP

My Dad has a 93 Ranger 4.0L automatic 4x4, the other day he was coming home from fishing and it just shut off. He got out popped the hood and the 4 or 5 wires going to the tranny had been laying on the exaust manifold and melted then shorted out. Then he noticed the fuel pump wasnt running so he thought the tranny was ok and he put a new fuel pump in it and still wont start. Could the short have burnt out the computer or tripped a sensor or something telling the fuel pump not to come on? I need help ASAP this is his DD. Thank you in advance.

check fuses first and if your lucky you can probably replace a couple fuses and tape up the wires individually.

Yeah first thing I checked was the fuses, all intact. My dad says he fixed the wires but it still wont start. Im just wondering if it fried the computer or tripped like a safty switch.

Did you shut the fuel shut off under the pass side glove box (kick plate)? Little red button the size of a nickel? The is no fuel pressure at all?

No I havent checked that, maybe the short tripped it, No nothing happens when you turn the key and if you try to start it it just keeps turning over but never fires.

Something is still blown. Look in the underhood power distro box.

Actually he gets nothing (no lights or dingers) when he puts the key to on, it is probably not the fuel pump relay. More likely the 50a ignition power fuse.

Actually it does have lights and the dinger, what i ment by "nothing happens" was the new fuel pump does nothing. You can hear the fuel relay click but no pump.

check and make sure you have ALL the wires taped up correctly. then use a multimeter or voltage light to check and see if have fire at the pump connector. need 12 voltls or if using a test light it should burn bright. if not, trace the wires bck to were you can no longer get to them and check them there. if no fire there check you fuel pump fuse. with the fuse out you should have fire on one side not the other. if there is fire there you have a broken wire, the wires are not correctly connected, or the new fuel pump is no good.

Wires are good, I have 7.8V to the pump, fuel pump fuse is at 12.3v on one side nothing on the other. Fuel pump relay has power to it as well. If I put a hot wire to the pump just to test it, it works, so I know the pump is ok. Im working on this daily my dad has borrowed a vehicle for now so Im not in such a rush.

Ok. you have a wiring problem if you're only getting 7.8v at the pump. So, we need to figure out if the problem is in the positive or negative wire going to the pump.

When you check the voltage at the pump connector, please report the both of the following findings:

(1) Meter positive to connector positive, meter negative to connector negative.

(2) Meter positive to connector positive, meter negative to chassis/body ground.

If 1 is low and 2 is normal, then the problem is in your pump negative wire. If 1 and 2 are both low, then the problem is in your positive pump wire.

if both wires are in the same harness that was burnt, i would go ahead and splice into the wires with about 6 inches before the burnt place with two new fuel pump wires. that would eliminate both hot and ground.
