I drove a 2000 reg cab with a 5 speed and the 2.5l and it had some get up an go for a 4 banger. It seemed to be faster than my expedition which has a massive v8. (Faster being a relative term)
And on the highway I got close to 30mpg. That was with no ac and doing about 65

Buy a light color truck, White or Silver. Black or Grey will bake you in the Arizona sun.

yea if you wanted something a little older, the 2.5 four cyl. get around pretty good. plus for mileage, a regular cab helps alot in my opinion

We use to have one of the extended one's with the 3.0/auto. It was a great van.

Sweet Ride dude! ...So what part of AZ are you going to be in... if its Phx then you don't really have to worry about any hills with the 4cyl... of course you will want good AC, I've already gone one summer w/out AC and it is miserable!

Thanks for the replies all! Yea, the van was a freebie when I got my license...it has done everything i've needed from it so far. if only it had AC.

I'll be in Tucson, and should be in a vanpool to work so I won't have to worry about too many hills daily. I just need the power for driving over to AZ from Los Angeles, and for when I haul stuff occasionally. It sounds like standard cab with the duratec 2.3 or the older 2.5 both do well in terms of power and mpg. I'm still looking on cragslist!

Also, from what i've read online (we all know the internet never lies), dark color cars just heat up faster than a light colored car...after a certain amount of time, they both get to the same hot temperature.

If you will have covered parking where you are living then I wouldn't worry to much about the exterior color.... as for the interior stick to fabric though.... you wouldn't (well, you probably would) believe how bad black leather is in the summertime out here.... I've actually had a steering wheel and shift knob almost too hot to touch!

My family even sent me oven mitts to keep in the car as a joke!

x3 on the 2.5. I used to have a 2000 Ranger single cab long bed with the 2.5. That little truck would go, even with the long bed.

Best of luck on your truck search!

haha!! thats awesome. I've had my shifter and steering wheel be too hot to comfortably touch for more than a few seconds, but no burning skin off or anything. I'm going to look at a 2005 2.3l, manual, short cab, tomrrow. its priced low cause it has a few dents in the bumpers, but that gives the truck character!

haha I just watched that video....I can see the similarity lol. I was mostly looking to see if there was anything I should be aware of regarding a certain ranger engine/year or anything like that. I guess I learned that people tend to like whatever ranger they have.
