Default Strange problem

I have a 93 Ranger 2-wheel drive 3.0 V6, auto.
Problem:
Upon starting the idle runs a bit high and when I put it in reverse the rear end "clunks" quite hard. I can let it idle for quite a while the idle comes down a bit but not enough as it still "clunks" when put into reverse. This has already caused one rear end to destroy itself, and I do not want to install another anytime soon.
I have replaced virtually every thing under the hood including every sensor, vacuum line and anything that moves or not.
The only thing I have not changed is the Co2 (Oxygen) sensor that plugs into the exhaust pipe, Has anyone had a problem with their Oxygen sensor?
I have had the vehicle in two separate auto repair shops and to date not one can tell me what is going on.
A side note: I can drive the truck for a short time and the idle comes down and it will go into reverse with almost no "clunking".
any thoughts?
Thanks

I have replaced IAC, and installed new u-Joints along with the new (used 62000 miles) rear end. The last mechanic said he could smell unburnt fuel at the tail pipe when at idle.

Thanks
Manny
