damn yeah im getting not that much worse in my 4x4, i think i could justify buying a second one if i got somewhere around 25 mpg, but not low 20s, its just going to cost too much. no point in working all this extra bit and making more money if i spend it all on gas...

I've got a 2011 XLT, 2.3L (Auto) Super-crammed opps I mean Super Cab. Anyway I've just now got 3K miles on the odometer and my mpg's are improving. Anyway I use this truck as a work truck 95% of the time and it's loaded with 500-600 lbs of tools and gear. Loaded it gets 21-22 mpgs +/- a few weeks ago a buddy of mine and I took my Ranger to a baseball game because his Mazda B3000 is a thirsty V6. Anyway I took all of my tools out of the truck for the 200+ mile round trip and drove 70 mph with cruise on and got 29.3 mpg hand calculated. I thought that was impressive for a truck if you ask me.

Also the 2.3 is pleanty fast enough empty, I had no problems on hills or passing. Funny there was a point where I had to go around a big rig and my buddy with the 3.0L Mazda B-Series was like "this thing scoots for a 4-banger" Lol in hindsight I wish I would have got the manual as I don't like the gear hunting my auto does on hills. But overall I really love this truck.

Oddly enough, tiredness has a say in this. I had a '97 2wd 2.3L manual before the Ranger I have now, and since it only had 70k on it and everything was fresh it would see figures close to 30mpg on the interstate with enough power I ever needed from it. Since swapping for a '96 2wd 2.3L manual with 170k+ on it, I've noticed fuel economy has taken a slight dip to about 25 or so. Still, not bad, and at times I'm not exactly gentle on it.

my mpg might have been off. It seems that I was pulling over 400 miles a tank in my 2wd, I found some old fuel reciepts. I think it had a 16 gal tank, so around 25 mpg...

My situation is similar to yours. I put together a cheap, ugly, and effective sleeping/camping setup out of a a $25 craigslist topper, some 2x6 boards and a sheet of plywood. I sleep on top of the deck and stuff is stored below. Works great.

My 2.3L 2wd 5spd truck is getting this MPG:

I've driven it about 3k miles with this setup but just started posting the info on fuelly.
