Follow up.

Hi all thanks for all the responses. I've been on the phone with both the business manager and the sales person for an hour. They tried to tell me the weight was fine and that Ford always documents 1000 lbs less than what they can really tow. Anyone ever hear that before? Also that I could put everything in the truck. I'm still uncomfortable with it all. They said I would get my money back, and that they are a reputable company. I finally ended by saying I will wait until I can get a truck with a bigger engine, than I wouldn't have to worry about it. and that 100 lbs from the maximum is just too close for comfort for me. They seem to think that as long as it is around the max. number your good to go.

well even if ford does underate their trucks by 1000 pounds the weight that the dealer gave you on the camper is the dry weight. that doesnt include a full tank of water, camping gear, food, propane ect. which can quickly take up that 1000 pounds putting you well over your truck rated capacity. you said it yourself that you wouldnt be comfortable pulling it and i personally would want to pull anything im not comfortable pulling. chances are if properly equipped with electric brakes and a WD hitch the truck would pull it ok but some states hold you accountable if you are in an accident involving and overloaded truck so you have to consider that as well. dont let them bully you into something youre not comfortable with, they dont care as long as they make a sale. When i was camper shopping i did my homework before hand to find out what my truck (F-150) was capable of handling and i couldnt believe the massive campers they were trying to sell me, even after i told them my truck wasnt rated for it. they would just say "oh, youll be fine". of coarse its easy for them to say that because its not their truck. do what you think is right, not what the dealer says is right.

That's unfortunate, but it really isn't the salesman's fault you didn't know your truck's capability. He is selling trailers, not trucks, so he really won't know how much your truck could tow (even if he thinks he does). I think it comes down to buyer beware really, but I still believe you should get your money back for it as it is a bad situation to be in and the dealership of the trailers should be sympathetic if they want your future business. good luck with it.

I don't think they have any legal right to keep ypur your deposit, unless it was a special bulild that had to be ordered. If you paid by credit card contact the company explain the situation and have them retract the transaction. If they continue to refuse to return your deposit there is always small claims court. Good luck. Everyone makes mistakes but that shouldn't be a reason for someone to take unfair advantage.

Good Work!!!!

I have seen a trailer salesmen sell a gooseneck to someone with a 1/2Ton Tahoe.

Stupid shit happens! Salesmen's pressure, excitement to get a new toy, whatever, I'm glad to see you will be taken care of.

And for the record, I've sold a few cars/trucks/trailers on dealer lots. IF that guy was a REAL salesmen he would have known to sell you the right trailer, because when you DO get a bigger truck, you'd come to him for the BIG trailer.

Pop ups ROCK!!!
Mine is a 12 foot box and opens to about 24 feet!!

Sidenote; my owners manual states that the frontal area limit for a trailer is 50 square feet. Not enough for a conventional travel trailer. That is a very little known fact.

To Matt I believe, you are right! I was not prepared and should have known what my truck's max trailer weight is. I do now! Hard lesson learned. I did receive my money back though and so happy

I think I'll go with a small pop-up; they feel more like camping.

The tear-drops are cute, but not much room.

And with a large pop-up I think I'll run into the same problem with the weight.

When I finally do decide, I'll be going campin'!

Lola

I think this one will do just fine. Small but it will work.
