Fuel Transfer Tank + Hot Sun = Boom?
Today's warm up got me to thinking:
I have a 25 gallon steel transfer tank in my bed. Currently painted thick diesel yellow (yes it's cleaned, and yes its full of 85 octane unleaded)
It has a regular twist gas cap that holds pressure just fine, every time I open it I hear pressure.
The only other opening is a welded bung with a pipe-thread fitting, which currently has a 1/2" ball-valve on it, Holds pressure and doesn't leak. I have 10ft of fuel line attached to to the ball valve, with a bolt on the end and a hose clamp to make sure it doesn't leak no matter what.
Stupid question: Do I have a ticking time bomb in my bed?
I open the cap to relieve pressure all the time but sometimes it builds up FAST when it's hot out.
Do I need a different cap that's pressure relieving or something??

Re: Fuel Transfer Tank + Hot Sun = Boom?
this thread is like someone asking the question - can my tires explode if I drive from a heated 70* garage, to the outside where it's -20* ?
the answer for both questions (yours and his) is NO.

Well I don't THINK I'm an idiot for asking a question.
But thank you for an answer!
I wasn't sure if a steel can thats 150* could ignite the vapors or not.
At very least I would expect that if waaay too much pressure built up either the cap or the ball valve would give, and the vapor would all go rushing out, followed by all my liquid gasoline and my $$$.

Re: Fuel Transfer Tank + Hot Sun = Boom?
Dont open it when it is that hot though. Me and gf were driving to california last summer and we were in dead stop traffic going through death valley, 116 degrees, in her black corvette. When we pulled over for gas and I opened the cap gas and vapor just started spraying out! lol

Re: Fuel Transfer Tank + Hot Sun = Boom?
I can open the cap part way, and let vapor out but not liquid, like with a radiator cap when it's hot.
So if I'm concerned about the pressure, and I let it vent once or twice a day due to the masssive heat buildup. Am I losing any real quantafiable amount of gasoline? I doubt it but it's worth figuring out.

Re: Fuel Transfer Tank + Hot Sun = Boom?
who made the tank ? (manufacturer) if you can, call them and ask them if the hot sun will make the tank go "boom"

Re: Fuel Transfer Tank + Hot Sun = Boom?
take this from someone who builds gas stations, you should have a vent on the tank, even tho most transfer tanks carry diesel thoes should also have vents

Re: Fuel Transfer Tank + Hot Sun = Boom?
What kind of vent do I need?
Does someone make/sell a generic replacement gas cap that's vented for this purpose?
It's not the 2" thread/screw kind. IT's the old kind of cap with 2 little tangs that engage then twist.

Re: Fuel Transfer Tank + Hot Sun = Boom?
you can get a vent from probally any pluming store.we get ours from a gasoline supplier, the ones we use have a weight in them so when it builds up pressure it pushes the weight up to relive the pressure the goes back down.
