Default ...as I yelled FVCK!...

So I'm driving home tonight and get to a stoplight. I make the left, then I glance at my mirror and see a cars taillights coming away from my back bumper... I start staring in my mirror, make a right, he does too. Still staring at my mirror, I see him fly up on my ass end as fast as he can as I make a right corner and I hold on because I see him coming and BAM!!!! FVCK! I just got rear ended. I slam my door open and he is backing up. I get his license plate just in case (glance over the car, Green dodge neon) as he drives away smoke boiling off of his engine. I jump back in my truck, start it back up, and chase him down as his car dies completely on the opposite side of the road.

Get the cops on the phone and he gets out (35-40 yr old6', male, white, scruffy beard about 6') and he is coming towards me yelling profanities and I'm telling the cop everything as it happens. Cops show up get the info and ask me "did you smell alcohol on his breath?" I nodded and said I did when he was coming towards me.

They do a field sobriety as I watch from my truck, which he failed horribly, next thing I know they are pulling something out of his pocket and putting him in handcuffs and in the back of the squad car. So now cop comes back to me and tells me they are booking him for DUI, possesion of narcotics, and hit and run. I'm thinking, thats good news. Then he says he had no insurance, no license, and no registration on the car... Well that F's me over.

But if you remember from a while back, the truck is going back in the bankruptcy. Pictures will be up tomorrow.

Question time.

1. what does a stepside bedside replacement run? and paint for that?
2. what does a bumper run?
3. For insurance people, does the check come to me and I choose a fix it shop or do they do it all? Do i just gather quotes?

i'm lost...

not sure about the first two questions, But, My Insurance company (state farm) lets you choose a shop that they (State Farm Recommends for colision repair) State farm will then receive a bill for the repairs from that shop and will pay it. State farm will NOT send the owner of the car insured a check, because they know people might just spend it on other stuff and not get the vehicle fixed.
also, State farm insurance (in MN) also has a "Uninsured/underinsured" requirement that means if someone is at fault for hitting you and is uninsured or Underinsured, or Is a "hit and run" your not liable to pay the costs to fix your vehicle. UNLESS you DON'T have collision coverage.
Now, what your policy has and who your Insurance company is, may have a different set of rules

In mass we have extra coverage on our insurance policy thta covers us for uninsured / underinsured . My Insurance company will go fight the battle with him to recover . Can't answer the other 2 as I don't know what the replacement costs are but I cannot see it going over a thousand for everything , I would say much cheaper . My ram 1500 got hit from behind about 7 years ago , and it was 850 dollars to replace the entire 3 piece bumper ....

as hard as he hit me, I'm surprised it isn't worse. The Reese hitch took the impact and the bumper only bent a little. The important part is i got a drunk off the road, and they found his meth pipe.

I'll probably replace the bumper (Junkyard) and patch the crack in the 'glass.

Yeah I would just replace the bumper and repair the stepside. I got to looking on eBay right after I got my steppie and they were wanting around 400 for the panel replacements. As far as what a jy would want I have no clue.

Different states have different laws, but in Ohio and my dealings with insurance -- they cut you the check. Insurance can't force one to get your vehicle fixed, however, if one is involved in a wreck, the insurance company of who is paying has the responsiblity of getting your vehicle back to pre-accident condition.

My 02' Ranger was rear-ended on the freeway, and the Honda driver who hit me was cited for "failure to maintain an assured distance". State Farm paid me $800 to have my bumper "fixed" (according to my body shop estimate) -- even though only the brackets were bent since he slid under me. My dad and I bought new bumper brackets for $40ish and put the old bumper on.

My wife's 07' Edge was broadsided a couple years ago as she went through a green light. It was sunny and a guy in a Nissan ran a light. We needed a new driver's door and driver's side wheel + rental for a week. The estimate for body work was $1400. His insurance was State Farm, and I'm almost 100% positive that they paid us and we paid the shop that did the work. As a courtesy, the rental company met us at the shop, and we took possession of the keys and showed I'D that we were legal, etc., but that bill was already taken care of.

Good luck, and you're right to be upset, but at least you are physically O.K.

I love watching people fail field sobriety tests. It's the best entertainment money can't buy at car accidents.

If you're truck is going to be repossesed / turned in, why do you want to fix it?

I looked at it more today, in the daylight, and noticed that the back cab wall was hit hard as well. The bed was tweaked and the body mounts are bent as well. I'm thinking the frame should be straight but it may not be. so regardless, they will have to replace the driver side bed panel as well as fix the cab dents. then the body mounts.

I'd like to keep a good rapport with the loan company, which is why I wanna get it fixed, or at least as close as possible. I know it'll just go across the auction floor for 3000 tops but I'd like to do the right thing, for the most part.

Do the right thing? I don't think you have any obligation whatsoever regarding the condition of the vehicle now as the owner or at the time they take it back. There is also no such thing as having a good rapore with the load company. They only care about whether you're paying bills or not paying bills. You aren't doing the right thing, you're wasting your money, which clearly is tight right now.

If it is still drivable, drive it, and let them take it if they want it back.
