Default ABS on 93 XLT 2X4

Have a couple of questions if I may:
First is regarding the ABS on my 93 XLT 2X4:
When I turn the key to start the engine the ABS light comes on and when engine starts it goes out as it is suppose to do. The problems is it appears the ABS is not functioning because when I apply the breaks the front engage too much and does not appear to equalize.
On the same topic my insurance company does not recognize that a 93 even comes with ABS, I have taken it into my agent to check the ABS light, the company will not accept his word, they say I must take it to qualified shop and have them give a written statement that It does indeed have ABS.
Any help on the breaking problem would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Well, it may only have rear ABS, I forget what year they went to 4-Wheel ABS on rangers.

If you go hard on the breaks does the front tend to lock up and slide the tires?

Your truck has ABS on the rear brakes only, so don't expect it to do anything to stop front wheel lockup. If the light is on all the time, the RABS probably isn't working. In that case, it should default to conventional non-ABS operation. It sounds like the brakes need work in the ABS and/or in the base braking system.

They can look up RABS online in any 93 Ranger specification list. Here's one:
http://www.edmunds.com/ford/ranger/1...res-specs.html
They may only recognize 4-wheel ABS though, in which case you do not have it.

Ranger ABS systems by year:

1989~1994:
RABS (1-channel, 2-wheel, rear-only ABS) was standard factory equipment on all U.S. production Rangers.

1995~2000:
RABS continued to be standard.
4WABS (3-channel, 4-wheel ABS) became available as an option.

2001~2009:
4WABS (3-channel, 4-wheel ABS) + EBFD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) became standard factory equipment. RABS discontinued and unavailable.

2010~2011:
4WABS (4-channel, 4-wheel ABS) + EBFD
The ABS also provides inputs to the traction control, ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and RSC (Roll Stability Control) systems.
