Default Can a tachometer be added

One of the things that I don't understand about my ranger is; why is there no tachometer when it is a 5spd?

So I was wondering, is the engine setup for a tachometer hookup? I have heard that you can get RPM readings a number of different ways so I wasn't sure where to start.

If so, can you recommend an aftermarked kit or setup that would be a neat mod?

Thanks in advance.

Yes you can simply add a instrument cluster with a tach. It is simple plug and play

1995-2003 rangers clusters will work

www.car-part.com search salvage yards in your area

A couple of thoughts.

1. the recommended shift points (by MPH) are in the manual, I think
2. if you are looking for steady-state RPM and not "do I shift now" information you could plug in a Scangauge II or Ultragauge. They plug into the OBD2 port so there is no real installation required. Plus you'd get a ton of other gauges.

Jason, thanks for the tip! This is exactly the kind of thing I was wanting. I am really just interested in collecting data about engine.

The Ultragauge is much cheaper in price and I like it's layout better. How have you liked yours?

I have a ultragauge also. They are nice. Very useful with many gauges. The service reminder is nice along with the fuel mpg

Yes, I've really enjoyed having it: well worth the money, IMO.

I use it to monitor MPG (to improve my driving habits), to monitor engine temp more closely in the Texas summers, to see and reset CEL codes, estimate miles left until empty, etc.
