First of all let me say. I believe in a persons right to have guns. I own them, shoot them and will be receiving a Concealed permit this summer. I have grown up with handling and shooting firearms my whole life. I understand how they work and know how to safely handle a firearm.

Personally, I do not see the need to carry a handgun anywhere outside of a shooting range or the woods. Why do you need it? There is no reason to ever need to use it. It is not your place to use it or try and use it to stop someone. That role is for the police who are properly trained in those types of situations.

My problems with open carry and even concealed carry is training. Anyone can buy a handgun and get a permit to carry it. Well not anyone but any person who falls within the regulations. With virtually no training at all, someone can have a handgun and possibly cause more harm then good.

I know that most people who wish for open carry laws are smart, well trained firearm owners. They are not the people I worry about. I worry about the person who has a little bit of a hero complex and wants to "help" keep the streets safe. These are the people who should never be allowed to carry. I know this is personally opinion but it is how I feel.

If there were mandatory training for be able to carry openly, then I would be for it. And not a day training telling people what they should and should not do. I mean a full several weekend or week long training program that teaches people when it is proper to use their weapon. This will give people the knowledge needed to not make certain situations worse and get an innocent person hurt.
With all due respect ,43 other open carry States dont seem to have experenced your fears(and they are nothing but irrational fears on your part, but I respect your right to bury your head in the sand)

Call it what you want. It is stupidity of some people that I worry about.

As I said in my post that if there was proper training I would be for it.

If you have the right to carry, does that automatically give you the right to use your gun in public? And not at a public range, but using it to try and stop a crime.

Carrying a gun may deter some criminals from committing crimes, but what happens if you walk into a situation where someone is committing a crime. Will you pull your gun and try to be a hero? Escalate the situation and hope no one gets hurt?

Proper training would help a lot for situations like that. It would give people the right ways to make it through situations with the lease possible chance of someone being shot.

-------------------------------------------------------------

I have a question for everyone else.

Why do you need to carry a gun in public? Even if there were not laws stopping you from doing it, why is it so important to show everyone you have a gun?

I understand why SWC906 would. I live in the U.P. too. I carry in the woods too.

I don't carry everwhere I go. But there are some places that I go where I feel safer carrying my gun. Does that make me a bad person? I don't believe so. Im just using my right as a gun owner and carry a gun to make myself feel safer. Im not trying to be a hero or a show off. Most of the time I am carrying %90 of the people I run into don't even notice I have a gun. And the %10 that do usually are just curious. Since MOC has been on the news a few times and are getting the word out I have never had someone call the police on me or had anyone ask me to leave a store or there property. You would be suprised how many people support open carry. Now on a different subject, you said you are all for concealed carry correct? His do you feel about the students for concealed carry? (SCC)
