scanners only work for 96+ models because they have OBDII. Pre-96 will have OBDI and you will have to find someone with an OBDI scanner to have the codes read.
I have read somewhere though, that you can take a piece of wire and use it as a jumper and use it to read codes by how the CEL blinks. It may be in the Haynes Manual
