Tap the signal wire of the aftermarket tach into the tan/yellow wire anywhere between the PCM and the cluster.

There isnt a wire to tap into coming from the hole for the tach from the PCM to the gauge cluster.
What would the next option be?

The tan/yellow goes from pin 48 of the PCM (passenger side firewall) to the instrument cluster via the engine harness, engine bay harness and dash harness.

I'll look again, but if I'm not mistaken pin 48 (no tan/yellow wire), as have looked at my PCM previously, has nothing coming from it..
am i completely missing it? Is it possible, because my ranger doesnt have a factory tach that pin 48 is left empty?

Anything is possible. FWIW, the 2000 Ford factory wiring manual shows that pin position filled for all engines including the 2.5L. However, that may have changed after the book was published at the beginning of the model year. I can send a pin/wire for the PCM connector if you want to add it. PM me.
