ahh I gotcha now, well first i wouldnt use the 2.9 col. Bad motor in my opinion. Id slip a 4.0 in it. Good solid V6. Id also suggest a 3.0 vulcan but many people will argue they are underpowered. Are you runnign an auto or manual trans.

go for a 5 spd. 4.0L OHV is gonna be your best bet. the earliest run of the OHV was 1990 or you can go for the 4.0 SOHC that ran from 2001 to 07 i beleive

I disagree about the 2.9 being a bad engine. My dad had a Ranger with well over 300,000 miles with one in it. Granted, he did have to replace the head gaskets twice, but it was a great truck.

If you want carbed, your best bet would be the 2.8 since it was the only one made with a carb in the Ranger. Personally, I would swap in the good old 4.0 if I were set on a V6.

Missed the carb part. my bad. But the earliest EFI was 1990 for the 4.0 so I think you are gonna have to go with the 2.8 MFI. Early 2.9s had complications like cracking and splitting of the cyl head.

Uhm...efi was 1986 when they introduced the 2.9.

If you find a 2.9 liter after 1989, you shouldn't have any problems with the heads cracking from overheating as they beefed up the material they used for them in that model year. But, like I said, I would try to look for the 4.0. Even with that, you'll probably want to replace the rockers and pushrods since the design of the OHV made it so they didn't get a very good supply of oil up there.

And the 2.8 was axed in 86 when they introduced the 2.9 as the replacement.

there were 2 generations on the 2.8 you cant find first gens and they were sub par anyways. The 2nd gen came out in 74 a year after your truck. they are very easy to maintain and cheap to buy

----------

but seriously all these options are good, if i were you i would go with the 4.0 and buck up on the electrical it will be worth it/

So a2.9 after 89 or a 4.0 after 90? When did they change the 4.0 from the first design

The 4.0 OHV was pretty much unchanged until they introduced the SOHC. They did some computer work to the OHV in 95 I believe, but other then that it didn't make a change until 2000.
