Wish royal purple wasn't so god damn expensive, if i ever come across a good deal for royal purple i will be using rp 5w-30 and a K&n filter. but my next best is Mobile 1 full synth. and whatever filter is mostly accessible ;P but i like the way Mobile 1 breaks in after a few miles

I've used Royal Purple in all my cars until now, worth it's price in oil (..oh wait..). But, that was for a Lexus IS250 and a Lexus HS250h, so at the moment, I have no idea what to use. Anyone have a good oil for me? I'm not sure what the previous owner used, it's a 4.0 FX4 2005, shade under 115k, drives beautifully, no knocks, kicks, pings, pangs, slips or sputters. Will Royal Purple not keep the cracks-due-to-age sealed well enough, will using a synthetic in general be dangerous, in case the previous owner used non-synthetic?

the way upgrading to a syn is supposed to be done is, add a motor flush to current oil, run for 5 minutes, drain and change oil filter, add a blend of syn [ not pure syn ] run for 3000, then you can stay with the blend or go pure syn. under 50,000 i think you can change to pur syn. tha amsoil site has a lot of good info on it.

Good info Jim, thanks. I'm just going to show my mechanic your post and have him take care of the rest, he's awesome!

I have used Pennzoil for years and it works just great. I use it in my 68 Camaro 327, in the wifes Lexus ES350, and in my ranger. I only use Mobile 1 in my vette.

You are wasting your money on syn oil if you change it at 3k or 5k. Sym oil is designed to go more miles at higher temps. My vette can with syn oil and I will follow that plan. I don't feel I will gain anything with our other cars by switching to syn over dyno oils.

Interesting read - seems most are really brand loyal when it comes to oil choice.

The only thing that I can add is that with API rating the same, there are probably only minor differences between brands.

It was informative to read about composition of oil refined from Pennsylvania crude - something I had not heard before, but totally plausible.

As for synthetics, it seems that the "quality control" is probably better, because in a sense, synthetics are "manufactured" to more exacting and specific parameters.

The other thing readers should consider is that there are only a handfull of refiners, and often they produce a lot of "house brand" products for various retailers - so the names might be different, but the product inside may be the same.

Sort of like oil filters - Honeywell is a big manufacturer of oil filters, and they also produce Fram.

As long as you're happy with what you're using.

For myself, any brand will do - I change the oil regularly enough that sometimes it seems that it doesn't even stay in there long enough for me to determine which brand is "best".

i was always told that you could switch between full synth, to conventional whenever you want. I Have been running mobile 1 since 95k miles, at 99k now and the previous owner was using motorcraft. no problems whatsoever.
