Default 2011 2.3 (auto) should I be getting better mpg's?

Just filled my second tank today and calculated another 17.4 mpg fill up. Before I knock the truck, this is a huge increase over the 10-11 mpg's I was getting from my 6.O Vortec Chevy 2500 HD. In the trucks defense I've given it 2-3 days of 2-5 minute warm-ups because it has been chilly. Also I have had over 600 lbs worth of tools and gear in the bed since day one. I also only have just 600 miles on the truck so it's technically not broken in yet. The tires had 35 PSI when it left the dealer; I just filled the tank and pumped my rubber up to the 44 PSI max to see if this helps. I do a lot of stop & go with mixed freeway but mostly in town. I was just hoping I could hit or exceed the 20 mpg mark, even with the weight in the box. Just for reference I rented two2011 V6 4x4 Toyota Tacomas over the last month while I had some warranty work done on my Chevy. To my surprise both V6 Yotas returned 21.3 mpg on the same commute, with nearly the same load in the box save for maybe 100 lbs. everything I read prior to getting my Ranger showed it was the most fuel efficient truck you could buy, and that was the main reason I got it. I'm extremely happy with it but hoped the real world mileage would be better.

I have no-doubt it will get that empty, but do you really think I could still pull down 25 with as much weight as I'm hualing? I'm wondering if it's the sag in the rear pushing the nose up causing a lot of drag under the truck?

Automatic's get worse MPG than manual's.
The 600 lbs of added weight probably isn't helping but I don't think it would pull it down that much. I do mostly city stop and go driving also and that kills the MPG for almost any vehicle.

Check out my MPG history here. Click the link to to show all fuel up's.

600 lbs is quite a bit of weight.. How hard do you drive it? Take off slow on starts. Makes a huge difference.

Also,I would guess the truck probably has 4:10 gears - not the most friendly for MPG. But a weak 4 banger with an auto trans - those setups usually have around 4:10 gears in trucks to keep them from being total dogs off the line.

I get 21mpg with my '95 3.0 Ranger auto w/ 3.45 gears.

My 2009 2.3 gets about 25 on average. It has a stick with 3.73 rear end. You could always get a run empty out on the highway and see if it goes up.

the sag can easily be solved by an add a leaf, whether that will fix the gas issue.....probably not

My wife's '96 Ranger XL (2.3 liter, 5 speed) gets an average of 28 mpg on the highway. It's gotten as high as 32 mpg. She carries everything but a kitchen sink in the back all year round. Has a fiberglass tonneau cover as well.

I was carrying 700 pounds of gravel yesterday and it really was dragging it down. I can't imagine driving it like that all the time. I would definately add helper springs to it, but since I was spending a lot of time shifting down I bet my mileage was hurting while I was that loaded. I don't think it is the aero that is the problem, but the fact the the tranny probably keeps you in lower gears longer and more often.

Yeah, but I don't have them working yet. I put a new switch in it since the wiring looked like it was all there, but it did not work. If I jump them in the relay box they come on. Someone told me that I have to get the computer updated to recognize them. I will get that when I get a few extra bucks. Also put carpet in it and upgraded the stereo to have 4 speakers with integrated bluetooth. No bad looking for 2wd XL.

its definetly the weight in the truck. the 4 cyl is not meant to haul 600 lbs everyday. on my 3.0 wen i fill the bed up i get horrible gas mileage. and its putting extra strain on the tranny and motor

Ok guys, I aired the tires up to the max 44PSI mark, haven’t really changed my driving style other than put almost 997 miles on the truck now. Last week I improved my MPG’s by 2mpg. I calculated an honest 19.3 on my last tank. This was mostly in town, mixed highway with a 400-600 lb load +/-. I think the truck is breaking in and hopefully when the truck if fully broken in it will stay above 20 mpg.
