your A/C and heat are two seperate systems. first have you noticed any over heating? I f so you need to get it checked out it could be a thermostat, water pump, or block in the radiator or a hose. If not over heating then there could be a block in the heater hose that is keeping the fluid from reaching the core. It may even be a bad heater core. Sounds try squeezing the lines and see if you feel and lumps. you may even be able to break a blockage loose by doing that.

Does the engine heat up normally? Could be a stuck thermostat.

try changing ur thermostat, sounds like it may be stuck open, so, its letting coolant constantly in your system, instead of letting it heat up and then in to your system,

so you have low coolant, that also can cause it. i would think it is the heater core

Default Heater core

Try having the heater core flushed. This may work. Depending on how old your truck is if it needs a new heater core you may just want to get another truck.

It may also be the "valve" at the hoses that lets the warm coolant into the heater core...It usually doesn't go bad but the hoses may become brittle and break....this happened to me, but opposite situation, I just used small washer fluid line to fix it.

My wife's explorer had the same problem. It turned out be the vacuum control valve that ford97ranger mentioned. The part cost under $10 bucks and shouldn't be much more than that for your year model. Her engine would always heat up but the heater inside took a very long time to warm-up and even then it didn't get very warm.

Looking for a solution myself. I did find that the part the temperature control knob turns is broken. It is a plastic part behind the air bag that turns the gear that controls the valve for the hot water. I tried epoxying it. That only worked for a couple of weeks now I'm back to square one. Anyone have any luck replacing or fixing this? right now all I have is heat and can't adjust to cool air.

I found a nice how to with pictures on repairing the blend door a few months
back that involved drilling a hole and putting a screw through the whole shebang.

Now that it is getting colder, and I'd like to work on it, I can't find it.

Will post a link if I do...

___EDIT___

Found it;

Gonna go give it a try.
