Hi guys,

I was wondering if my Ranger will be able to safely tow a car trailer with a Mustang on it. This is something I will likely be doing in the future and it's a long haul from my home town in Newfoundland to Ontario where I'm living. It's about 2,728km (1,756 miles) one way.

The car weighs about 2775 lbs and the trailer I'm guessing would be about 1650 lbs.

What do you think? Could she do it?

Awesome to hear! Does anyone know what class hitch comes with the ranger from the Dealer? Class II or III?

Also would you really need a brake controller for electric brakes? I noticed she's only wired with the 4 way plug for lights.

It should be on a label or stamped on the hitch.
You will absolutely need brakes operating on the trailer.
Did it come with the tow package?

youll need a class 3. and id reccomend the electric brakes.

brake controller is a must and i think it comes with a class 3 hitch.. seems to be stock on other rangers...

that load will be iffy to pull with a ranger but if properly equipped it can do it. the factory hitch is a class III hitch so youre good there but i would also highly suggest a weight distributing hitch system because in order to properly load the trailer you will quickly exceed the rated allowable tongue weight for that truck so a WD hitch will help with that. also dont even think about pulling that kind of weight without utilizing the electric brakes on the trailer, getting that load going is one thing but stopping it, especially a panic stop is a whole different animal. get a good brake controller and be sure the brakes on the trailer work.

FWIW I would check the trailer towing charts in your owner's manual. For my 2010 4x4 the charts show a towing capacity of 3000 to 3300 pounds for a 4.0 with a manual tranny. Trucks with the 4.0 and auto tranny are rated much higher (5000 pounds +). So it looks like you would be 1000 pounds overweight for your setup. The factory receiver hitch would be ok with that but your clutch and tranny may not hold up. As far as brakes go if you are going to be using a rental car hauler most of them come with surge brakes so you would be ok with that. Bottom line is it's your call but if it was me I'd look for another solution. JMHO.

Where do you live and where are you going, if youre pulling mountains make sure you have trailer brakes

I most likely will encounter some mountains along the way but nothing too extreme, basically anything that would warrant a sign for trucks to use low gear and check brakes before going up and down the hills.

I'm surprised that the 5 speed would have a lower towing capacity than the automatic though.

Spoke to my ford sales rep about the lower towing capacity on the manual vs the auto. He says the manual is rated lower for warranty reasons to compensate driver error. I am sure that the 5 spd manual and clutch will hold up against the weight as long as the frivers is experienced in driving manual efficently without overbearing the clutch.
