Got a new 2011 2.3L, whirrr whirrr noise at low speed only in 1st gear?

Hi Yall, I took the plunge and got me a Ranger. I've been wanting a basic but smaller pickup for awhile as my '08 GM 3/4 6.0L was KILLING ME on gas. Anyway just took delivery of a 2011 2wd XLT 2.3L (Auto)

Anyway, sorry to make a concern with a noise my first post but is it normal to hear a whirrrrrr whirrrrrr whiny sort of sound in the drive-train? It only does it in 1st gear and low speed. As soon as the slush-box shifts to 2nd gear there is no more noise. I've only got 30 miles on it. I test drove the truck on the lot and didn't hear it, but now that it's home and I drove to the store I can deffinately hear a loud whirrrrrrr rrrr at low speed, only in 1st. Aside from that I think I'm going to love this little truck. Oh BTW this is my first Ford, I don't think anyone in my family has ever owned a Ford but I hope I made a good choice. Thanks in advance.

Welcome Ryan, to answer your question it normally wouldn't be normal but the truck is new and hasn't had time to break in yet, but do keep an eye on it. Does it do that when you turn the steering wheel? the whrrr whrrr noise you hear could be your power steering winding up. But like I said your truck is new and sometimes that is normal. Mine did that when I first got it 7 years ago but quit shortly after 30,000 miles once it was broken in. Still keep an eye on it, and take care of your new ranger. It will last a good while and yes you did make a sound investment.

Thanks for the quick response. Yeah the noise is heard only when going straight and forward. The sound reminds me of the way a monorail at an amusment park sounds like when it starts to move. Like I said as sooe as the trans gets to 2nd gear and 3rd, and so on it is quiet in operation. I was thinking since it only had 5 miles on it when I signed the papers there is a lot of breaking in to be had so we will see.

My girlfriends 2008 Escape 2.3L 4wd marks What I believe is the same noise you speak of. Drives me nuts but it has been that way since she got it.

Do these have the same engine/ trans as the Ranger?

Kool. Every vehicle has it's quirks and habits, this just might be the case. It might be a small defect in the trans that causes no problems. It varies from vehicle to vehicle really.

Yes. The escape, and explorer do use some of the same engines and trans but not always. The explorer makes a great donor package for those wanting a V8 in their ranger. Ford basicly has done the work for you concerning a V8 engine swap (of course it depends on which V8 model you want).

Welcome this is a great site lots of guys and gals on here with great info. I too purchased my first Ford Truck like you this past month. I love it so far. I guess I need to turn down the stereo some to see if mine makes any noises. They seem to be great little trucks and I have the 4 cylinder and it is easy on the gas.

Mine has same issue 98 ranger auto trans whines in first shifts fine just whines but my truck has 133k on it
