I'm an idiot.
Yesterday was the first time I ever tanked up my newly acquired Ranger. I was nervous to see how much mileage I would get on the 4.0L chugger and my mind was elsewhere while my ATM card was refused at the pump and I couldn't figure out why. While I was juggling a few thoughts, the pump finally decides to accept my money and activates.
I pick up the pump and notice that the nozzle doesn't fit into my filler hole. Strange. I figure it's to let the air bleed or something (I know, hurr durr) but really didn't even think twice about it as my head ponders on the traffic ahead and I start pumping. Ding. Ding. Ding. About 10 liters in, it hits me like a sac of bricks. I'm pumping diesel into a gas engine. Fuuuu! I immediately stop the pump and crawl into the cab swearing like a sailor who's just ripped off a nail while my girlfriend stares at me with a grin. I figure that I either have to push the truck to the side, get it towed home and get the tank flushed, or top it off with gas and pray. I topped it off, like a man.
Luckily, it didn't seem to have any effect on the engine. No pings or weird noises nor any struggling. I was expecting black smoke, but nothing. All is well. Except for the gas mileage. And that I'm an idiot.

Still driving on that same tank. It's about 10L of Diesel with 60L of gasoline. Have yet to notice any hiccups.

Re: I'm an idiot.
I would top it off with gas to thin the mix further

Re: I'm an idiot.
I'm nearing the bottom end of that tank. Should I get a mechanic to drain the fuel line, or would the diesel burn off with the gas? I'm not sure if it'd ignite like gasoline since it requires compression?

Re: I'm an idiot.
I'm sure it mixed & burned with the gas. I would run some injector cleaner in the next tank just for piece of mind.

Re: I'm an idiot.
I would throw the highest octane available into it and pray .
Otherwise , remove the tank and drain it . Gas and diesel don't mix well . Diesel is much heavier and slower burning .

Re: I'm an idiot.
KEEP thinning it out
I had a gas pump fill my Volvo with diesel once (yes the pump REALLY was marked INCORRECTLY at Sap Bross in the middle of no where Nebraska)
I caught it as soon as I turned the key 1 click (thank god).
They drained the tank, new filter/pickup, pumped clean fuel through the supply and return lines. And then filled it with 95octane. And it ran like SHIT for the first 100mi. Then finally came around.
YOUR DAMN LUCKY

Re: I'm an idiot.
I'm not sure what benefit higher octane fuel will add. It is already a very bad mix. Putting in anything other than 87 will just make a bad mix even worse. Do not put anything other than 87 in it.
Change the fuel filter after the next full tank of GAS. And I'd run a 1/2 tank of seafoam in the tank, 1/4 in the brake booster hose, and a 1/4 in the oil. Change the oil after the seafoam treatment too.

Re: I'm an idiot.
Either way , We all make mistakes , some more serious than others . Its a big one but it can be fixed ....
I would prob flush the tank but you may get lucky . Tell us what you hear in case someone else does the same thing ....
