I have always been a fan of castrol myself. I use full synthetic in my wife's car and high mileage in my truck.

Is Penzoil any good?

I'd go to Ford, but seeing how they are so god damn incompetent, and charge 40-45$ more than wal mart (not sure if WM uses Mobil or Penzoil, hence the question lol), the alternative is very attractive.

i use pennzoil, have for years. if Q.S. was really crap, it would no longer exist. most sludge problems are due to other issues such as the engine not getting to the proper temperature, lack of proper change intervals, ect. filter wise i use motorcraft in the ranger, fram in the S-blazer. both vehicles run the "high milage" 5w30 pennzoil.

It's the brand loyalty thing. Some of their oils are pretty good, but not all. Just like any other manufacturer out there, it's really a matter of preferance. Penzoil is pretty good I've used it myself. Penzoil Platinum 10W30. My truck calls for 5W20 but that viscosity is too thin and it doesn't get cold enough around here for thin oil to be required. Plus I get alot better fuel economy with 10W30 than the 5W20 because it takes longer for it to reach the operating temperature. Here's an oil I love:

This stuff is really good, but at nearly $9.00 bucks a quart (around my area of course) it can put a hurtin on your wallet.
I'm not saying QS is bad, but it aint the best either.

Pennzoil and Quaker State are both made by Shell, who acquired the companies about 10-15 years ago. Just branding.

Shell is one of the world's largest lubricant manufacturers and makes oil for the Ferrari Formula 1 team and Penske's INDYCAR and NASCAR teams. They have a custom fuels and lubriants lab just for racing.

The oils from 10-15 years ago are very different than today and today's are much better.

not quite, they are now with Penske Racing in Nascar, but last season they were with #29 Kevin Harvick and Richard Childress. But you're right about the oils being different from years ago. They say that modern oil can hurt a vintage engine due to lack of a compound called ZZDP. They claim without this compound the valvetrain takes a beating and it also cause premature engine failure too.

My question is this, What are your thoughts on valvoline synthetic vs. Mobil 1 synthetic.

Looking to grab some oil toady for an oil change, but looks like the mobil 1 package deal has gone up in price, 32.99 for 5qts and a mobil 1 filter. Or, the Valvoline 5qts and a purolator filter for 27.99.

I think the filters are both good, hey there not frams! lol

But what about the oil itself...?

And for you motorcraf guys, I respect your thoughts, but Im not buying Motorcraft! hahahaha
I have used Valvoline full synthetic oil many times and has been great every since. I stopped using it because the amount I pay for that, I can get Mobil 1 fully synthetic which a lot of people around town and on here has told me good things about it. Both are fantastic oil and you can't go wrong with them. I used to use Fram filters until I saw what was inside them. So I switched to Motorcraft. Oh, and go fuck yourself! Motorcraft FTMFW! IM JUST PLAYING! Don't go and shoot me now lmao. What other filters are good that you are going to use besides motorcraft? Just wondering. Well that was my opinion and real life experience. Hoped that help. Good luck!

I usually get either K&N, Mobil 1 or Bosch for filters. Those are the ones generally on sale with the oil. Mobil, castro or valvoline rotate every month on sale for around $30 with filter. I went ahead and went with castrol with the K&N.

----------

which you really can not beat, 5qts AND filter for $30 of full synthetic...!?! what a steal

Damn! Yeah and that is why I do my own oil. People around here in shops tend to tighten the filter to tight or lose some/all my tire caps. Unbelievable!

so if my 2010 2.3 L calls for 5w-20 is it ok to use 10w-30? will it mess things up and will it really improve MPG?

I would not put anything other than 5w20 in it. If anything in the cold months you could see if you could find a 5w10 and use that. My V6 ranger has a hard time firing up on those freezing mornings.

I agree because the newer engines have extremely tight clearances concerning the internals, plus that engine is an OHC motor so a thicker oil might do some major damage. It isn't like my 3.0 OHV at all.
