Or anyone that drives like one.

How do some of you claim to get 25plus mpg with a stick. I take off beyond slow and shift at 1100 for the first 3 gears then at 1600 for 4th and 5th. I drive so slow when I take off and don't go above 55. I still blow through gas... how do you drive?

Before this week I drive like a mad man. Now I'm doing an experiment to save money.

I did the same experiment. However, I drive an auto tranny. Driving normalling i get arond 18-20 mpg. Driving like a granny I got around 20-22 mpg... Not a HUGE difference, but anything helps. It just depends on if you can afford that wasted time I guess.

Just keep the RPMs under 2000. Pay attention to lights. Don't accelerate up to a red light. Coast when ever you can. No fast start or stops.

I just don't know to what extent this will work, I doubt you will get 25 US MPG when you have old tech V6s. you mostly hear the good MPG on the new 2.3L 4 cyl.

neutral drop like a beast. When you see a light ahead of you change to red, dropt it in neutral to coast, don't coast in gear.

you could be lugging the motor, shifting around 1100 is really low, its not a v8, it dont have the torque to maintain low rpms. Not to say it dont have any torque, but there is an optimum rpm range. I usually shift at 3k and ease into the throttle. I think as a general rule of thumb, speed should match gear. 1st - up to 10 mph, 2nd - 20, 5th - 50+

another thing I find useful with the expedition is to time turns and stop and go right. Time the coasting of the truck so you are still rolling when the light turns green, starting from a dead stop will use alot of fuel. So another words, try to NEVER Stop moving!

also, when I drive the expedition, I hit 14 mpg CITY driving. 19 on the highway. It has the overhead display so take that for what it is. My wife on the other hand, city - 12. Hwy -16

I've never gotten better than 20mpg with my 4.0, that's with shifting between 2-3,000RPMs, never going more than 10MPH above the speed limit, and keeping a large distance between me and the car in front so I'm not constantly going between the gas and the brakes, and not speeding up to lights.

I'm currently trying the same thing with my new car, though it's still breaking in. I just got 21.4MPG driving normally with a 5.0, I'm stoked - but I want more out of it.

Holy Geez, some of you are shifting at 3K RPM, wow i hardly ever hit north of 2,5K when i shift and when I cruise on the highway in 5th gear I am at 2,250 Rpm.

depends on your gearing too, I have 4:10 gears so 2500 RPMs comes up pretty quick in first gear.

When I had my 5speed F150 With the 3-0 straight six I shifted at 10 20 30 40 and45. I got @25 mpg even with the hevier truck.

well a 4.10 will ruin your fuel economy, I have a 3.55, but if i could i would have a 3.25 instead for even better fuel economy.

Mine is a '95 Ranger 3.0L 4spd with 3.45 gears.

Got it a couple months ago and have put a good thousand or so miles on it. I had to put on rebuilt heads and gave it a FULL tune up (plugs, wires, cleaned carbon on pistons while heads were off, air filter, fuel filter, trans filter, belt, fuel injector cleaner, new tires, shocks, coils, ball joints, alignment, etc..)

I just checked the mileage for the first time and I'm getting 21mpg. It's a combo of city and hwy, but mostly hwy. I live around a lot of 45-50mph roads, but lots of 4 way stops.

I was actually hoping for a few more than that considering the motor is tuned up like new, and I drove like a Grandma.

I also didn't have my spare tire or holder, but have a tool box with probably 15 pounds in it. Some driving was with a passenger, but not much of it at all.

I have a check engine light for the EGR control valve. The little silver box by the EGR is what causes it.. I'm replacing it today. Hoping maybe the truck will do a little better with that. The truck feels a little sluggish accelerating sometimes. Like it almost wants to chug a little. But it's probably just because the truck is really a dog. It idles like a top. But maybe swapping the new sensor in could help. If it improves drivability at all I would expect some MPG gain.

16 city and 22 hwy is the EPA estimate.. So I'm guessing everything is fine and accurate. If I did all hwy driving with the tailgate down, I bet I could hit 25, or close to it.

Gears obviously make a huge difference. I'm glad mine only has 3.45s...Like I said, the truck is a dog - but I wouldn't want any worse MPG. It's already costing me about $40 a week.

guys, it's a truck. if you intended on driving something with good gas mileage, you would have purchased some tiny compact car.
you knew what kind of mileage a ranger gets when you purchased it.

Ive noticed on my Ultra-Gauge that if I drive faster, the Instananeous MPG figure goes down, but if i stay around 50-55, that seems to be the sweet spot, I drive an auto though.

However, i have the 4.0 and my mileage sucks anyways

Hmmm Dixie, Auto, 4x4 and 4.10 gears, you must be getting some of the worse fuel econo here. .

anywho back on topic. I don't complain about the fuel econo of my 4L. I knew what I was getting as long as I am in 20-25MPG, i am happy.... so far I have been doing 19 MPG (broken in phase+winter+city driving) Its good to me
