If the truck is worth 5K and it is gonna cost 2K-3K to fix it. It maybe worth just ditching it. Unless it has some special value to you.

I think if it ever happened to me such as a blown engine or frame rot/damage I would replace the frame or the engine...I like my truck too much to let it go

I feel the same as Clinton. Maybe it's just cause it's my first vehicle and i've grown pretty fond of it, but if the engine or tranny went, i'd more than likely replace the part(s).

It's really a personal opinion, but if it's costing you more than it would have if you just bought i new one, then maybe it's time to do some shopping, but if you get it fixed, at least you know whats in it, and that it's in working order. If you buy a new used one, sometime you don't know what your gonna get.

I'm on my 3rd Ranger. The first 2 that I had were used and alot of problems and would've costed me more to repair than it would've to replace them. This one had alot of problems when the 1st engine blew but since I got it brand new and I have full coverage which includes mechanical breakdown coverage. After geico sent 2 engines that sucked, we went through a salvage yard and it's still running as we speak. Geico tried to fix it on the cheap but spent more than $10 grand trying to fix it on the cheap. After their 2nd engine blew, they were going to send another one but I told them that if they did it will be used as a boat anchor. They ended up getting rid of their supplier due to I wasn't the only one that had the same problems.

What sig?

I would repair anything on my truck. partially because i cant afford another one, and repairing it, if you do it yourself, you can go around and say, "Yea, i fixed it myself, how much labor charges did you pay for yours to get fixed?"

It's all preference. I have the know how to fix it. I'll get rid of her when someone tbones me so bad I can't fix her without costing me stupid amounts of money. Otherwise, I have a lot of family history with the truck, and I'll keep driving her till her fuel needle hits E at the end of my life, they take my drivers license away. Or gasoline, whichever the hippies take first.

Honestly, yeah. I've had a broken down Ranger for over two years and the only reason I haven't fixed it is because every time I look at it, I'm frustrated. The Ranger has had nothing but problems since I've had it, and it seems like once one thing is fixed, something else goes wrong.

However, I am going to fix it this year because it was my first pickup (worth having anyway) and it was also the first vehicle I bought without any help from anybody else. To me, it's like the first dollar I ever made. I don't think I'll just ditch it when it's time for it to retire for good, but I don't think I will just keep pouring money into it either. It's pretty bad that I have $8000 into a truck I bought with 160K miles and only have put 28K on it. It would be different if that $8000 was money put into mods, but most of that was repairs.

I bought one with a blown engine for $900 with the cap. I've put more into it it than I bought it for because I wanted to and it's paid for. Everyone has to make their own judgment call on where to draw the line on when to keep it and when to get rid of it.

To me, that fact that its paid for and has potential is enough for me. The question to you is, would you rather have a payment on a vehicle that technically isn't yours until the loan is paid or would you rather put money into a vehicle that is yours out right? I'm willing to bet the latter will be cheaper over the long run and you aren't in hock to nobody.

This is coming from someone who has gone the "loans up to their eyeballs" route and through a bankruptcy. Don't owe anyone money if you can help it and pay cash for everything you can. If you can't pay cash, do you really need it?

I couldn't agree more! Sold my Jeep so back to 3 vehicles, I owe no one anything for any of them.
