Default strange phone calls

I bought a new Ranger in July from the local dealer and have had no problems with it. Yesterday there were two messages on my recorder when I got home - the first one was from "Hal Hanson" who said he was from Ford Motor company and that I should call him regarding a recall on the drivetrain on my truck. The second one came a few hours later and had a different name and phone number - that time they mentioned the dealer's name and said something about taking care of the transmission problems I've been having. Towards the end of the message he said something like "thanks for buying one of our fine products from China". I asked the dealer about it and they said there is no recall and don't know anything about it. They figured it was someone trying to sell extended warranty stuff - but it didn't really seem like that - I wonder what the heck that crack about China was supposed to mean.
Whoever was calling evidently does not work for Ford and shouldn't be claiming to. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

I haven't heard of this one before but that is definitely what it is. When I got to work on Monday morning, I'll do some checking to see if anything like that has ever been reported before.

That is definitely weird. I never bothered to look into this, but I have been wondering if Ford gives out your personal info to third parties. After I bought my Ranger, I started getting crap about extended warranties in the mail, and this stuff was not from Ford. It wasn't happening frequently enough for me to be too concerned about it - maybe twice a month, and I just shredded the stuff. Obviously, it wasn't coincidence that I started getting stuff in the mail shortly after I bought the truck, but I don't remember anything in the fine print of the paperwork when I bought the truck that said that Ford would give out your name/address/phone to third parties. It seems like if they were going to do that, they'd have a legal obligation to disclose that.
If it were me, I'd probably just ignore it unless it keeps happening, but it wouldn't hurt to look into it either.

I'm pretty sure they buy the list of newly registered vehicles direct from the DMV. Isn't that info like that publicly accessible? A friend of my boss does repo's and he has a subscription to a service that gives him a ton of info on people and their cars.

I still get that warranty crap in the mail and I bought my Ranger in 2002! Not sure if it's Ford... remember the dealer obviously has your info as does the insurance company and the bank. My guess is the dealer sells a list to marketing companies because shortly after I bought my truck I got annoying automated calls from them hawking their service and used car departments (Van Boxtel Ford in Green Bay). It only stopped when they got bought out (*knock on wood*).

Whatever the case... somebody is spilling the info, that's for sure.
