i dont recall ever seeing a 4cly 4x4 it would kind of defeat the purpose of a 4 cyl in my opinion because they are made for mpg and 4x4 defintly throws that out of the window on a lower power motor like that

1989 I think was the last year. My dad had one. It was nice. 2.3L with a 5 speed.

I wish I still had it. It would have made a great little wheeler.

They were still making the 2.3 4x4 up until 96, never seen any info. past that. Saw one on a dealers used lot that caught my attention because i didn't know Ford had ever done a 4 popper 4x4. If you google you'll will find some, but all 5 speeds. Seems like there is a market for it given all the Toys out there, but Ford just didn't seem too interested.

You can still get good MPGs with a 4 banger 4x4. Just got to build up the engine with some parts, etc.

Ford and Mazda made my Ford Courier with a 2.3L and once the Ford Courier truck came from Japan they shipped it off to a 4x4 company who made it into 4x4.

He's not asking if they had manual transmissions, he's asking if they had automatics in the 90's.

And to answer your question, no, they did not. If you got a 4 cylinder 4X4, you got a 5 speed manual.

You could possibly somehow convert one to automatic.
