Thinking of making a custom center console
I want to take out the cup holders under the radio in my truck, and make a center console out of sheet metal and then probably carpet it. I want to make custom spots for all my switches and gadgets on my truck, as well as a spot for my CB radio and my race radio so only the face of the radios face out
Anyone have some pics of something they did similar to this? Or maybe some pics you have found?
Here are a couple pics that I have found for a little inspiration:
Very similar to this, how they have a couple switches and only the face of the radio facing out.

Re: Thinking of making a custom center console
Well, I build a center console for my Chevy. I did it out of MDF because I'm a wood guy and don't know how to work metal. I plan on adding more to it, but here's the jist of it:
I plan on extending it out to the dash, and possibly up to the back seat since I don't normally have more then 3 or 4 people in it at a time. I've wanted to do one in the Ranger too, but it doesn't make sense to build something for it when I can't even use the truck, lol.

Re: Thinking of making a custom center console
That's pretty cool. I just mainly want to do it so I can have all my accessories and switches all in the same spot
Instead of 3 switches for lights under my head unit, the air horn switch next to that, and my CB and race radio in the back mounted to my sub box blah blah blah

I hear ya. I want to make mine bigger for all the same reasons. Only reason I built this one is because my Chev is a work truck model and came with a fixed back center seat for the front bench so no arm rest. I've put almost 40K on the truck since I bought it ('09), and it would have been uncomfortable as hell to drive that far without an arm rest.
Not sure what the price of sheet metal is, but my MDF was like $25 for a 4X8 sheet, and I still have over half of it left. Plus you can carpet it pretty easy, and it's pretty damn easy to work with.

Re: Thinking of making a custom center console
I think I might do what you did with the MDF, and it would be a hell of a lot easier to work with. I will just make a slot for a little piece of sheet metal to put my switches on
Or maybe even a piece of plexyglass with some LEDs in it to light up the inside of it

i think the plexi would be easy to work with and would be clasyer than the sheet metal, with some low level leds behind it it would look pretty bling. For that matter the whole thing could be made out of smoked plexi or clear and paint to match from the underside.
