Default Check gauge

We took my truck up to the shop today my dads friend owns it. I just wanted him to figuire out my vent problem so he did that. On the way home today the dash said check gauge. I checked the oil and was good then I checked the tranny fluid and it looked low because it wasn't in the "dashed" area. Could that be my check gauge problem?

No. That light is only for the things that actually have gauges. Low fuel, low oil pressure, and high coolant temperature. Also, I believe the hashmarks on the dipstick indicate where it is supposed to be. There are full and low marks on it too.

Well it is pretty low on gas but I didnt think that would be enough for a light. And the fluid is under hash marks

Well it usually comes on right at about the red mark on the fuel. If you fill up and the light goes off, you have your answer. But if none of the other conditions I listed are at issue, then that is probably why the light is on.

There is no sensor or gauge for the transmission.

The Check Gage info is in the owner's manual. Lots of other useful stuff including specific instructions on the correct way to check the transmission fluid level.

If you don't have an owners manual, you can use the link in my signature to download the .pdf file.

As far as fuel level goes, Ford gives you roughly 50~60 miles notice before empty with its low fuel indicators. That corresponds to about 3~3.5 gallons in a Ranger.
