Default Key Programming Question

So i went to the Ford place today to get a new key and chip. The cost of the key was going to be $25. The lady I talked to said that they would have to program it and it would be an extra $60 dollars to do that. I know that in my truck manual it shows how to program a new key. I told her this about how it shows in my manual to program the new key, but she said that they would have to do it. My moms just got a new key for her F-150 and my dad programmed it. Has anyone ever done this before(programmed their own key), or is the Ford place just wanting more money out of me?

I had a locksmith do my truck on the seller's dime.

I can't remember if he used anything special or not though.

If you have both original keys (or two currently-working keys, anyway) for your truck, then you can follow the procedure in the manual to program additional keys.

If you have one or less working keys for your truck, you'll need to get the dealership or a locksmith to program the key.

I saw that in the manual where you have to have two keys. Do you know why you have to have to keys, because i bought my truck used and i only got one key with it.

Same here. I guess my locksmith did use a computer then.

Also, there is a limit as to how many keys can be made. My truck already has 6 out there. :/ I think the limit is 8?

unfortunately, if you only have one key, then you'll need to pay the dealership to program your second key. Yes, I do know why you have to have two keys -- because the end-user process detailed in the manual requires two currently-active keys in order to program additional keys.

once you have the 2nd key, though, you can program additional ones by yourself.

Its so no one can make a copy of your key and program their own. Its really easy to get ahold of just one of your keys. But getting ahold of too is almost impossible unless you have them on the same ring.

You can program a new key fob as long as your truck has keyless entry, but you have to have two original keys in order to get a new one made. The ford place wanted $64 dollars for a new key fob , i bought one off of amazon for $20.

...a key fob is not a key.

if you want to create a 3rd ignition key for your late-model Ranger, you'll need to have 2 working ignition keys already, or be willing to spend some $$ at the dealership.

if you want to create a new key fob, that's a lot easier and a lot less restrictive.

both operations, incidentally, should be detailed in the owner's manual for your truck.

I actually didn't know that you could program a whole separate key with your truck.
This is my first fully electrical vehicle that has a decently smart computer... haha
