Under Drive Pulleys
What are the advantages and disadvantages of under drive pulleys? What do they actually do? These would be installed on a bone stock 2000 Ranger 3.0, dailey driver. Noticed that they would cost about $199 bucks. So what does one get for $199?
BTW, this is a great forum, thanks for all the responses!

ya the $199 price includes water pump pulley, alternator pulley, crankshaft pulley and a gatorback belt, its easiest to do them all at the same time.

Advantages:
(1) more HP
(2) rev's up quicker
(3) better MPG
(4) less wear on the water pump & alternator
Disadvantages:
(1) if you do a lot of idling & run a large sound system the alternator may have trouble keeping up
Thats the only one I've heard of. I have been running U/D pullies on my Mustang for 3 years with 0 problems.

how much will the alternator be effected? i run emergency lights for the fire dept and often have to let the truck idle along the side of the road for up to an hour at a time some calls longer. my light is a strobe style not the rotators so it shouldn't draw that much from the battery but with the parking lights and 2 two way radios in the truck pulling juice from the battery could be an issue. I've often thought about doing the dual battery mod in this truck.

A few options for you.
A red top Ultima battery.
A high out put alternator
run 2 batteries
On a side note though, I don't think the lights you are using draw enough to cause you any issues.

you could throw in an exploder alternator, itll give you much more juice, and it bolts in. but the smaller alternator pulley is supposed to compensate for everything electrical.

you should be fine with that. id say get the 4 peice pulley kit from underdog, put it on, if you have some amperage problem or something electrical, just switch out your alternator for an exploder alt. but im sure you wont have any issues with just the pulleys

Wow, what a deal. More HP and better MPG. Seems like those two don't go together. So the only disadvantage is less alternator output, but should't be a problem with ordinary driving, right?

under normal driving it sounds like great deal. but i'm gonna look into an exploder alt so i can just swap everything at once.

Pulleys are kind of a final tap addition. Sure they will slightly reduce drag, allowing for slightly quicker revving, But generally the rotating mass weight savings outweigh the underiving on stock vehicles. It by itself will not produce noticeable MPG effects unless you are Driving Miss Daisy. As for underdriving the Alt. it would be fine under normal conditions as long as you commute regularly and you are not trying to be a ghetto King.
But if you have some amp eating accessories then you may want to consider a better alternator or just getting a lightened pulley not a underdriver. HTH
