Default Buying a truck which has lots of mileage.

I've looking for my future car from autotrader.com and I found a truck in my budget. It is ford ranger 2001 with 198544 miles.
The dealer of this car is pretty trustable and car looks great on pictures. $3,995 for msrp.
I wrecked my car and I need a ride asap.
I need a great advice from ya'll.
Thanks!!

Assume the previous owner was a duffus and immediately change all the fluids and filters. There are some people out there who think changing the engine oil and only the engine oil every 3,000 miles is taking good care of their vehicle.

In fact, change the tranny fluid twice and put in a new transmission filter with the second change. That will get the majority of the old transmission fluid and any crap in there out.

i would only pay that much for it if the motor & trans have been rebuilt / replaced at some point. or at least the trans.

a friend of mine has a '98 mazda B3000 ( ranger ) with about 250,000 miles on it and it runs just fine.... BUT the motor was replaced and has apx. 70,000 miles and the trans was replaced and has apx. 110,000 miles on it. and it's a 4x4. he paid $3500 for it i think, and he has all the recepts for the work done.

if you bought it i would at least see if you can get the dealership to replace that nasty ass front seat or clean it proper, and fix the tailgate handle.

Thanks for your advice!
I contacted to the dealer and waiting for answer that they replaced engine or trans. What if they do it is ok to deal?
I will try to low the price even if they fixed or not.

I'd buy it for about 2000 maybe... My 90 has around that millage and it runs great. But that price, I would say is way to much.

I picked up my old '00 with 189,000 miles for $800 private party. That dealership has that price jacked up way more than that truck is worth. Of course, what dealer doesn't do that?

I wouldn't pay more than 2 grand for that. That's a lot of miles for a 2001. My 1997 only has 87k and my dad's '97 astro only has 150k and that gets drove everywhere. By the way, is it just me or do those front seats look like they are in pretty rough shape?
