mine was totaled and put back together again when i bought it, if the dealer will let you i would take it to a shop and have them double check the frame make sure it is straight.

The truck I am looking at is a 2004 with 35k miles on it. The guy said the current title is a Reconstructed one (This is in MA btw). I guess MA has two types of salvage titles; salavge rebuildable and salvage, so I assume this truck was the rebuildable one. But here is my question, how much damage has to be done for the truck to be salvage rebuildable? The insurance company still has to claim the vehicle is a total loss right?

yup, what ever the insurance company says. basically they see it as the vehicle having more damage to it than its value, they total it out. It mostly about money. Some can be bad with severe frame defects but those would be the ones that couldnt pass the inspection to consider it a rebuilt vehicle and road worthy

i would buy a truck that had been hit if i was certain that there were no other flaws with it. would i purchase from a dealer? i doubt it cuz if its not bad enough to be listed on the titile the would end up charging you way to much for it.

I guess whats throwing me off is that I thought a car would be considered salvage if there was more than 75% of the value in damage. This truck supposedly just had the front bumper and front fenders replaced. The guy I am buying it from said he bought it from an auction and fixed it up to sell; so I guess the PO must have traded it into a dealer after it was damaged, and the dealer auctioned off. Do you think a Carfax would be worth it in this case to find out if the accident was reported and to see if the odometer is the original? The truck looks to be good to me, though I haven't driven/seen it in person yet. He's asking $9900 for it: http://westernmass.craigslist.org/ctd/2230374697.html

you can do a carfax, it wouldnt hurt. Your best bet is go over it really well. Dont miss a thing on it. I went over my truck for over 1 1/2 hours before I handed they guy money for it. Get the book value of it and the carfax. What ever the book value is on a regular title, cut it in half. Thats how I got mine, book on it was twice what I paid

Thanks for the help. I'll see if I can get any more information for him, and see how he is on price. I got a book value of about 13600 from KBB and 15100 from NADA (I did not know all of the options, but I did know the major ones). I'll have to see if he is a player around $7000 or so.

If its a rebuild make sure you pay half what it would be worth with a clean title because rebuilds are worth less if you wreck it or sell it.If you plan on driving it in to the ground it will probly be alright.
On a personal note i wouldnt hesitate to buy that one because of a dented fende and scratched bumper but since its rebuilt i wouldnt touch it.

=============================
Where did you get the 13600 / 15100 prices from?

I just went with the XLT standard options & stepside option.

Here's KBB listing:
Poor Severe mechanical and/or cosmetic defects and is in poor running condition.
May have problems that cannot be readily fixed such as a damaged frame or a rusted-through body.
Branded title (salvage, flood, etc.) or unsubstantiated mileage.
Kelley Blue Book does not attempt to report a value on a "poor" vehicle because the value of these vehicles varies greatly. A vehicle in poor condition may require an independent appraisal to determine its value.

KBB's trade in value: They don't list a POOR value............
Excellent $10,175
Good $9,700
Fair $8,900

guys i live in mass and i just went through a similar situation with my truck... When i had purchased my truck the title from mass was never turned in by one of the dealers that had owned it, because since they were in NH it wasn't required to have the MA title in NH and it just was lost somewhere in outer space, so now what i had to do it get a duplicate title. i guess what i'm trying to say is MA is really difficult with the RMV laws....

i would buy it even if it was a private party. only thing is 9500 seems pricy but its a dealer. Do your research and see what you come up with and decide.

Rat Ranger, I used the Good quality because from my research it seems vehicles with a reconstructed title are worth 50-60% of the original retail value (when the title was clean).

Just sold a real basic 2000 and bought a 2004 similar to yours for $$ more which is the market around here. The 2000 had been rolled which means they would have replaced the top half of the cab plus a truck load of other tin. Not an easy task. Zero problems in 8 years.

Don't know about all states, but in some states most insurance companies will not cover any more than liability for a vehicle with a rebuilt title. Some won't even cover them at all. You will have to check with your insurance company in your state.

if you know it was repaired right i wouldnt think twice about buying it (if the price is right) i own 3 previously totalled vehicles, (ranger, F-150, S-10 Blazer) all roll overs and have never had a lick of trouble as a result of them being repaired. its a good way to get nice low mile vehicles for cheap.
