Throttle cable mod and airbox mod are cheap ones you can start out with. Keep in mind you won't gain performance from mods, that's why they are mods and not upgrades.

Oh, and about the CAI in your signature, they really don't give you any increase in power over the stock air intake in a Ranger

i meant upgrades. headers and hi flo cats would help my exhaust flow, so thats why im gettin a CAI, to balance the increased outflow. my 4.10 gears will help with jumpin off the line (can smoke tires by rompin it without brakes) but when it comes to speed, ill tach out earlier

as far as engine modifications that will give you more performance start with the air box mod, thats free, for more performance, clean all your sensors and check your plugs and all that fun stuff. then when you start spending money get an exhaust, you can get a bigger throttle body, a hi po coil pack, a tuner, under drive pulleys, electric fans. there are plenty of ways to get more power out of it, just depends on your budget.

You have a 4x4 truck, why are you trying to race it?

practice your launch technique, and throw some kind of weight over the axle in the bed to help get some traction. a good launch without lots of wheelspin helps alot, and it's free!

the crank shaft runs the belts, so cutting down the effort it takes to turn the pulleys frees up power, just like getting rid of the fan, and installing an electric fan. also try dropping all the weight you can, anything you dont need take it out. get smaller tires for quicker acceleration, lighter rims, lots of stuff like that.

im talking if you really wanna lose weight there are things you can gut from the truck, do you have a bed liner? take it out, there are all kinds of things you could shave off for some weight, weather it would add up or not is dependent on how far you want to take this. but you could take your heads off and have them ported and polished, you could super charge it, you could do a motor swap in it. you really havent said how much you can spend.

Is your friends s10 a 4x4 or 2wd I have a guy at work with a Hyundai tiburon always saying lets race so this winter when there was 4" of snow on the parking lot I said lets go! that shut him up. point is you don't have to race to prove anything trust me it cost less and you'll live longer.

he is very right, thats like comparing apples to oranges, both are fruits but not the same, your truck has a lot of things a 2x4 doesnt have. start looking for used parts if you dont have a lot of money, if you have a limited slip rear diff challenge him to go off roading, these rangers wheel really well stock.

Ok, then take him out wheeling use the truck for what its intended for. They aren't race cars, they are ment to play in the hills and get you places a race car wont go.
