Don't mean to rain on your parade but might save you headaches. A lot of insurance companies ask "are there any modifications". You have trouble enough being 16, I just don't want the cancelling you or charging you a ton more after you buy. Check first. Good luck.

Bad information.
Modern engines frequently last over 180,000 miles without engine work. Long after a sixteen year old with his budget is likely hang on to one. So if it doesn't need work then the difficulty is meaningless. Plus he didn't know what 3.0 or 4.0 meant before starting this thread so I doubt if he's ready to yanking heads off. Hope he want's to learn someday though.
Don't OHC v-6 Rangers have 12 valves same as the pushrod engines?

Patience is a virtue. I almost put down $3k on a not that great looking/running '98 Ranger. I kept my eyes peeled and scoured everything I could find and found an awesome deal on an '05 for $3.5k. It has a few minor cosmetic issues which I'm currently addressing. I'm very happy with it and have definitely caught the Ranger bug.

I'd recommend going with a 2001.5 + with a 2.3 DOHC. (It'll probably be hard to find a 4.0 SOHC in a 2WD + you don't need that much power. I've already bought two 2001 + wrecked Rangers with the 4.0 SOHC because a 16 y/o got behind the wheel.) A 4X4 will keep you broke because of the hub units that go out pretty often.
Avoid the 3.0 aka 3.weak (It drinks the gas, and it doesn't have much power)
That's just my 2 cents

im 17 and got a 4.0 4x4. never got a ticket or in a wreck its just how the person drives and how responsible they are.... And that is true about livin in Florida tho he probably cant get as much use out of a 4x4 like i can in Va
