Default Stalling in 4low, any idea why?

2003 XLT FX4 w/ 4.0L. Noticed when I went off roading in thick mud, and again today trying to get up my really icy drive way that when I put the truck in 4low and get on the gas (hard) in 2nd gear the truck will stall out and I will have to restart it. Is this some kind of safety to keep any damage from happening or is there something wrong? Sorry in advance I know I should of looked in the manual. Thanks for any input no matter how obvious it maybe.

Could be because you are in low range gear and punching it, but thats just a guess based on another vehicle I have that did that in 4 low
