Default synthetic oil for 1997 ford ranger 2.3

I have never used synthetic oil in this truck. It has 140K miles and wonder if i should try it. I heard it can cause leaks because it has more cleaning agents. and is Castrol better than Mobil 1?

The seal expansion of today's synthetics is the same as conventional motor oil, so leaks are a thing of the past. Synthetics will keep the engine cleaner than conventional and it will hold up better. A fuel mileage increase will be there but is generally too small to notice, at most it will be about a mile per gallon benefit.

For what it is worth, I would recommend going with whatever synthetic is on sale at your local autoparts store. Going with Mobil1EP or one of the other more expensive ones will give little added benfit for you over whatever is on sale.

Around here, Valvoline seems to be the one that is on sale the most with Mobil1 or Quaker State thrown in every once in a while.

Thanks for the quick response Mike... I went to my nearest Autozone and they did have a special on the Mobil 1 fully synthetic...5QTS + oil and Mobil 1 filter for $30.00. The filter costs 12.99 itself. Seemed like a good deal so I bought it. I was gonna go for the Motorcraft filter cause it was only 4.99 but I figured since this deal came with a filter of the same brand I couldn't go wrong. Thanks for the insight on the synthetic oil and the fact that it should be safe for my high mileage Ranger.

Usualy amsoil is hard to find. I know a dealer i order it from. its Full synthetic the best amsoil offers. it is expensive up front but the change intervals are longer. the truck runs a lot better on it. you can order it online. just thought id mention it lol.

I would run Castrol Syntec High mileage on my old 92 accord with 315K, never had a problem, it ran better with it and at the end I would add Lucas oil additive and saw a huge difference and I think I will do the same with the Ranger
