Air box mod on steroids
Finished the air box mod this morning and put a new twist on it - more air = more better, right?

Re: Air box mod on steroids
Sometimes more air = vacuum leak.
An air box with holes in it is no longer weather proof. You really need to plug those holes back up or the first puddle you splash through is gonna saturate your air filter and cut your engine off.
Also remember that a naturally aspirated engine takes in only as much air as it needs regardless of the size of the inlet.

Re: Air box mod on steroids
correction.. you just turned your airbox into a giant straw to suck up any and all of the water that gets thrown into it from the next big puddle you go through.
and 2: you gained no increase of horsepower bc you're sucking up more HOT AIR from the engine compartment. HOT AIR=NO GAIN.
time to back up and punt.

Re: Air box mod on steroids
everybody makes mistakes.. luckily you can pop the lower half of an airbox out of a similar ranger at a junkyard for little to no money.
i find it best to leave it the way ford engineered it, kinda falls into the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" category.

Re: Air box mod on steroids
Actually edgeman, it doesn't create a straw. It actually helps to keep from sucking in water if you can believe it.
I wheeled with a smart guy known as N3elz on these forums - he's one of the reasons for alot of the mods we have for these Rangers. He did something similar to his intake and he never hydrolocked - and he hit the puddles hard - locked 2WD. You're more likely to hydrolock with a solid bottom air box then not (unless you've got a snorkel), his theory was this: If there's a solid bottom of on the air box, you've got a tub that will hold water that will get ingested by the intake. If there is a series of large holes at the bottom of the air box, the water will flow out as quickly as it came in, so there is less of a chance of getting ingested by the intake.

Re: Air box mod on steroids
the box will be fine,
I mod'd mine like this.. the side holes will be more prone to suck in "hot" air from engine bay.. (you want cold air)

think logically, take a shop-vac, hover it over a bowl of water, it will not suck it up untill you submerge the end in the water....
I drag race my Mopars, old racer trick to remove carbon is: remove air filter, run car at 3000rpms, and slowly poor a gallon of water into carb..
I recently did this to my moms S-10..
a little water will not hurt anything.. in the right application, it helps
