Hybrids are a different monster. They can be very efficient, but you need to be in the ideal area, no such place in canada.
As i said, europe got the hint that you can make a cleaner more efficient petrol engine, we'll prob get our first in 5-10 years?

for the most part "biofuels" are "clean." the system is not perfect but its a step in a better direction than where we are currently headed. i know that small scale production using cooking oils is very clean compared to other fuels.

Re: Diesel anyone?
If Biofuels are produced with renewable energy like solar, wind, hydro, etc. then they are certainly efficient enough. If you intend to make biofuel by burning fossil fuel then that is dumb.
For those that think that diesels don't perform, you should really take a ride in my Touareg sometime. It is the perfect powerband for heavier vehicles like trucks and SUVs and though rated only 18/25mpg I always get better than 20 around town and generally better than 27 on the H/W unless I am fighting lots of wind.
I am sold on clean diesel for specific applications.

Cooking oil is awesome, but that's on a very small scale, like one or two cars per restaurant. Plus you have to completely ignore how they were processed to make such a statement.

Biofuels cannot be produced with any kind of renewable resource.

The 107 million tons of grain that went to U.S. ethanol distilleries in 2009 was enough to feed 330 million people for one year at average world consumption levels. More than a quarter of the total U.S. grain crop was turned into ethanol to fuel cars last year

Total U.S. ethanol subsidies reached $7.7 billion last year according to the International Energy Industry, which said biofuels worldwide received more subsidies than any other form of renewable energy.

Ethanol derived from corn consumes up to three times more water than previously thought, according to a new study. … Corn ethanol is already plagued by environmental concerns such as pollution from fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides; soil erosion; greenhouse-gas emissions from production; and competition for agricultural land with food crops. … Ethanol consumes more water over time as corn production extends to regions that need extensive irrigation

In terms of energy output compared with energy input for ethanol production, the study found that:
* corn requires 29 percent more fossil energy than the fuel produced;
* switch grass requires 45 percent more fossil energy than the fuel produced; and
* wood biomass requires 57 percent more fossil energy than the fuel produced.
In terms of energy output compared with the energy input for biodiesel production, the study found that:
* soybean plants requires 27 percent more fossil energy than the fuel produced, and
* sunflower plants requires 118 percent more fossil energy than the fuel produced.

Says who? Are you saying you can't use electricity to ferment biofuel?

Think about which means you will produce electricity.

how does driving a smart car make him an idiot if he doesn't need a truck or suv? 60 mpg is awesome

did you miss the part where I said we can use plant waste? And how is making biofuels more polluting than what we do now ?

solar and wind turbines would do the trick. overtime solar can actually allow you to sell electricity to the power companies, or atleast out here on the left coast.

Maybe in the future, when technology evolves, but we're talking about now. Wind sucks, unless you're in an ideal area. I live in one and we haven't bothered with it because of the low output.
Besides, none of the two are reliable.
