Default HELP! before I get neck deep.

I am about start tearing apart my 94 4x4. The trans needs a rebuild, But instead of rebuilding it I am going to just swap the two out from my rwd... They say there both the m5od but different gear ratios and before I get neck deep in this project I need some honest feedback on if they will swap out with out any extra headach... Will they match up? Will the t case bolt up?

Your 2wd M5OD has a different tailshaft than the 4x4 M5OD. They will need to be swapped over. Also, IIRC, the output shafts are different, and will need to be swapped as well. This from what I understand is a very involved process. It's a good thing you didn't get involved in this project. If I were you i'd start looking for an M5OD from a 4x4 truck, or just have your current M5OD rebuilt.

manual trans are not that hard to rebuild/fix. I would strip both trans down and swap internals. the gear sets I believe come out in two shafts. So you could just swap the gears over.

Dont mean to sell myself short but I am not that mechanicly incline. I dropped my rwd ranger drive trans once before. I have a basic tool set and only 9 days to complete this. I dont want to get into the internals. I dont want any more head ach.

I didn't catch this before, but I see one truck has a 3.0, and the other 4.0. I'm not entirely sure if the bell housing bolt pattern is even the same between those two motors.

Thank god I live in motor city, with high volume of cars comes high volume of boneyards. I have saved myself a few bucks a time or two by calling around. I found 3 separate yards that have the exact trans I need. They want 400 for it, They will yank it their selves, and it has a 30 day return policy. I love the idea minus the fact that if something goes wrong I do not get a return on my sweat equity. What do you think of that idea vs a rebuild?

Junkyards can be hit and miss. If you can have your way, try to find out the date in which the donor truck came in, and the mileage on the truck. Usually, the longer the part has been sitting without constant lubrication, and the higher the mileage, the more trouble you may have.
