Default How reliable is our 4x4 system?

I have a 2011 Ranger Sport 4x4, and im just wondering how the long term durability of our 4x4 system. I had a 1997 S10 4x4 and when i pressed 4x4 i hoped and prayed that it worked.

How exactly does our system work and is there any tips to keep it from dudding out?

Stuff i ponder about in a snowstorm stuck in traffic...

I know the 98? trucks had vacuum lock hubs, and those liked to leave you stranded. I think they utilize something else now to lock the hubs. Either way, front axles aren't what they used to be. You want reliability? SAS/Manual transfer case swap.

you dont have the vacuum actuated hubs, the only thing that locks/ unlocks when you turn the switch is the transfer case so the lack of auto hubs removes one of the biggest 4x4 issues the rangers have had in the past. i know alot of members here dont like the electric shift tranfer case but ive had two rangers with the electric shift transfer case and ive never had an issue. the 4x4 system is pretty reliable IMO.

97 S10 with 4wd engagment issues, guarunteed vacuum hose problem for the actuation, or the electric actuator itself, I had a 96 Blazer with the same issue. Common issue.

2011 you have a live front axle, no hubs like mine to blow up. Your IFS, while not ideal for off road, is a good system, and will work awesome, just make sure to maintain all fluids in the transfer case, transmission and engine, don't forget your diffs either. I have heard of very few problems with any year and the electronic 4wd. Mine has gone through two Montana winters, driving all over high hell, mud, sand etc, and never failed me. I wouldn't even worry about it. I'd worry about the ******* driving next to you.

you do, you have torsion bar sprung IFS. by live axle he means that the front axle components (CV/ halfshafts, hubs, diff, front drive shaft) are engaged and turn all the time, only having power to them when the T-case is in the 4 Hi or 4 Low position. older models had either auto or manual locking hubs (depending on year) that would disconnect the front wheels from the rest of the front drivetrain for when the 4x4 was not in use.

Good question ....

So does the truck have full time 4Wheel drive meaning that there are no hubs and the axles are locked are locked all the time ?

I read the post above after I put this up , sorry ...

My 2010 should be the same way I assume ....

I have already gone out on the beach with it and it runs pretty good on the sand .
Have not yet had to use 4 wheel in the snow except a couple of times for fun ....

I had thought they were auto connecting hubs . Never knew it was designed like that either ....
