no wonder gas mileage sucks on the 4x4 with the live front axle.

Yup, your mileage will be reduced about .5 to 1.5 mpg with the live axle. That is what one of my instructors told me at least, and that's about what my truck loses when I lock my hubs in, since I do not have the live axle.
