Can thieves bypass PATS system on a Ranger....

assuming they have no owner programmed key.

if it gets towed of course you cannot do anything.

I was thinking of rigging a switch to disable the starter or something... and hiding it somewhere a thief would not imagine where to look...., if its not hackable then I wont bother....

in other words, can a locksmith or ex ford employee with the handheld device that plugs to OBD2 port start the truck?

Thieves these days are pretty smart. If they want it bad enough they will get it. Believe it or not, the best preventative thing you can use is the old fashioned club on the steering wheel.

in a couple of months I will be moving near the US/MEXICO border. I hate Illegal Alien Mexicans. Yes I am Mexican, but those illegals just cause nothing but trouble. only reason I was wondering....

----------

id like to be able to get the system they use on Bait cars. It would be nice if you could disable it over the internet. but it sounds like big bucks....

Its understandable, no one wants their stuff taken. Where I work we get some stolen cars from the Mall in town. Most of them go right to the cities and the guys taking it do it for a living and are alot quicker than you think. So having a club on the wheel is a good thing, No one has the time to sit there and try to hack it off when its supposed to be a quick boost

The bait cars are remote controlled and have cameras in them where there is a constant visual on them. Onstar is also a really good thing, it wont prevent the car from being taken but the GPS in them is dead on

You can program a new key through the port using a dealer or locksmith tool. Then I suppose you could just pop the ignition cylinder and hold the new key near the transceiver module to start it.

Some of those can be picked in 5 seconds with a pick/rake gun. Not all though. I do see the visual part of the club deterring most thieves.

Plus the On-Star has tracking capabilities and remote shut down doesn't it?

OnStar is going to start selling mirrors that you can put in any vehicle, might be something to check into. It has a lot of features including stolen vehicle location assistance.

I never liked the on-star idea since it's inception. Never liked having someone be able to monitor me or know where ever I was at any given time. Or now be able to shut the car off .
No way. I like my rights, that is another right you are giving away to someone. Privacy

My truck has a gps locator in it and its pretty close to onstar . Its called guidepoint and I am pretty sure it can locate the vehicle and I know it can open dorrs and do some other stuff so I know they can disable the ignition system as well .

When my father went down to the US/Mexico boarder. His friends suggested he install a fuel cut off or a starter cut off. They said with his F150 it would be gone in 5 seconds if not. He installed it in a really strange place, but came back with his truck.

I know how to do it, but I won't say how to.

But like Clinton, if they want it bad enough, they'll get it.

+1 on the club as the idea isn't to make it theft proof just to make it less attractive than the other vehicles around so they steal something else.

The PATS will stop a joy rider from busting the ignition to start your truck but a pro will target a specific type of vehicle and be hunting with an ECU and programmed key for that ECU. Once they find a car then break in like normal, bust ignition like normal but swap the ECU to be able to start the truck using the busted ignition.

Yeah I think a hidden kill switch is a good idea.
