Default overdrive

quick question my new 2010 ranger has a automatic with OD, i noticed that it will not shift into od till it warms up. anyone know if this is common ? i thought maybe it was just a feature in the truck, for it to warm up faster

I do not seem to have that issue but I'll keep an eye out for it . yesterday was SUPER cold and when I first took off , it seemed to lag a bit ( rpm's went up and did not shift right a way ) but a short trip to the highway and it shifted fine . I'll def keep an eye out on that ....

BTW nice truck !

right when the engine temp comes up, it shifts in actually kind of nice bc the truck warms up quicker. but i didn't know if it was something ford did. a sensor for the od

Yea I have found that out too ( shifting when you want ) . One downside I found is if you get on the gas in between shifts it has a tendancy to shift too slow .... I know the computer controls this but never stopped and tried to figure it out . Kinda bangs ggoiing into gear .
I am going to test my truck on the way home and see if I can make the shifting issue occur Justin .

All that has been mentioned seems to be commonplace among the 6 Automatic Rangers i've driven.

Not sure if it's normal though.

Do you crank it when cold and drive it out without any warm up period?
I haven't noticed this on my truck. When I first crank up the rpm's go up to near 2000 rpm's and holds that for a few seconds before slowly dropping down to near 1100 rpm. After that short warm up period I drive out. I haven't driven mine out straight from a cold start. My OD engages at 45 mph.

^^This is true.

I warm up my current Ranger before I go, and it doesn't have this problem. My old Ranger I would just hop in and go.

I have a scan gauge and can see gear ratio(gear selection), and the slip ratio of transmission shaft RPM input and output.

What I think you are seeing is a delay in the transmission locking up the torque convertor. The truck will quickly shift into OD(5th) even when cold but doesn't lock up the torque convertor until the tranmission fluid temp is high 90's/100F. Lucky it heat up fairly quickly even when cold.

It's interesting to watch the transmission work... the very quick jump in RPM when you step on the gas a bit is very often not a shift of the transmission to a lower gear but just unlocking the torque convertor.

I've found a few times when trying to get it to lockup at lower speeds if I disable/enable overdrive it'll lock up at a lower speed saving gas once the trans is up to temp.

Here's a link to the scangauge http://www.scangauge.com/

There's also lots of discussion and good comments on here about the ultragauge http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/index.htm

I'm unsure if the ultra gauge offers all the same info as the ScanGauge... I've asked questions before but didn't really get a response. I'll ask again as it is nicer looking and way cheaper. Here's the link to Ultra Gauge discussion http://www.fordrangerforum.com/produ...ng-thread.html

Here's a pic where I mounted my scangauge... fits in and doesn't look like a gps which I'm good with

and it's a simple install just plug it into the odbII port and it's ready same as ultra gauge.

Very cool info about anything and everything your truck is doing and helps gas mileage because you can see what's better and worse instantly.
