Default 1997 ranger, good or bad?

Hey all, Im new to this forum. I have a Lexus IS300 right now but Im leaning more into wanting a truck and lifting it. I like the 1995 toyota pick ups or the ford rangers. I was wondering if you guys/gals can help me out a little bit because Im trying to see if these trucks can hold up to a toyota? Im looking at a 1997 ford ranger xlt (link below) with 101,000 miles on it. i know its hard to try and determine if the car is in good condition but anything helps! Thanks!

I'd spend the extra money on the 98 xlt 4x4 they have there.

That truck looks really clean for its age, low miles too. Looks like a good buy, but have it looked at. It's well worth the money.

well the thing to consider is this, 97- is going to have TTB front suspension. I personally feel the TTB is tougher and can handle more abuse. The IFS in the 98+ trucks in going to give you a smoother ride. 98+ rangers have the 3rd door option. 98+ changed out to the raised hood/grill look which I like and so changed my 97 to a 2000 front end.

SL are going to be cheaper than those for the IFS. My opinion is this, get a 97- if your planning on offroading lifting it. I think the chasis will hold up better and moddifing will be cheaper on the ol pocket book.

I had a 98 2wd ranger in the past, it was a great little tuck, rode a lot better than my TTB rangers, but given the choice between the two I pick the TTB.

very reliable. My 4.0 in my plow rig has 272k miles, dont burn/leak/drip anything. I had two automatics go out on me, but could have been due to not putting the right fluid back in them when changing fluid and filter. Calls for mercon V, I did not know this at the time and used merc III. Other than that, the motors are very good, 4.0 and 2.3/5 are strong motors, I guess the 3.0s have a cam sync issue. I would not hesitate to purchase another ranger down the road. When I hit the bone yard I always look at the odometers, every ranger/explorer all have over 200+ 90% of the time, what does that tell you about them...?

Ummmm if he's planning on offroading and lifting he should get a 4x4 so he doesn't look like a poser.

What kind of offroading are you planning to do?

How big do you want to go with the lift?

The 98 might be a better way to go. You can adjust the torsion bars and fit 33/10.50s with very little rubbing. Or go with a bodylift and fit 33/12.50s.

lol im a newb to all this and dont really know jack shit about lifting trucks yet. I live in mass and dont really know where to go offroading. Im not looking to beat on the truck and Im not looking to go crazy with it. its future stuff that I lift it. I was thinking maybe just lifting it 3-6 inches? I really want a truck that can handle the weather we get up here and be able to throw snowboards and surfboards in the back.

----------

maybe something like this

Im sorry but I will be on the other side of the fence on this one. Get a 2001+ Extended cab 4x4. They have the better engines and everything else. I have no problems with my IFS, but you can easily SAS it or just swap out for coilovers on the front. Just make sure you get the 4.0 SOHC motor and not the 3.0 CRAP/SLOW motor.

Here are a few lifted 01+ 4x4s to entice you.

Im not lifted but here is my 06:

overall 01+ Rangers look better and they DO last a long time just like a Ranger should (as long as you take care of it)

I love my 97. It's only a 2.3 and 2wd with a 147000 miles and the only thing I replaced was the timing belt. I put a sl on it this past summer, about 5 inches all around plus limited slip. I will be making it 4wd and bigger engine. Here's how mine turned out.

From my experience with the 97 I say go for it.

I would love to go with the 01+ but the money thing is getting at me right now. Im graduating college now and dont want to be making crazy payments when I move out. Thats why I have been looking at the 97 and 98 models because they are cheaper. lol
