things to look for would be oil leaks/drips, coolant leaks/drips. Is the underside of the motor dry? look at the front and rear mains seal areas...are those dry? Check to see if valve covers are leaking or have leaked. Look inside the radiator cap to see what the coolant looks like. If they will do this for you have them, jack up the front end, check the tire for, side/side, check ball joints, tie-rod ends. Check the driveshaft for excessive movement, this would indicate bad u-joint(s), and obviously do a Hearing check, listen for any ticks, knock, pings or dings. Check to make sure it shifts fine, under hard driving and normal driving.

97 Ranger, 84500 miles, I've put 54500 on it in just over two years, the only hiccup I've ever had was killing the automatic hubs. I switched her over to manuals and I've never had an issue since. Been one of the best trucks I have ever owned, and I grew up on GM trucks. My truck has been through two cold (-20 degree average) Montana winters, that make yours look like childs play, towed me and all my crap in the bed and a trailer across the country from south of Seattle to eastern Tennessee. I think it'd be worth it to get a 97. But all the Rangers are good to own.

Thing to watch out for on 97's -

Make sure you have a good service record, they tend to crap head gaskets with higher miles, check all of the u joints and bushings, if they have gone bad you are not going to have a fun day, ever. Spend the money on quality Ford or better replacements. Also stay away from any truck with the 3.0 V6's. They are decent engines, but you will be wholly dissappointed by it's efforts to move the truck anywhere off road well. Especially if you drive the 4.0 truck ever. Also, the automatics are more stout then the manuals, make sure it is a old man truck, that will ensure you it will last longer. Or that it has a new clutch and maybe a professional rebuild. This will prevent you from being stranded.

Other then that, welcome to FRF. Screw Toyota, buy American

I love my 97 it has 145,000 and she's still going strong, it drives great in the snow (if your not trying to drift like me ) and it can take a pretty good beating off road. All my friends call it the little red tank.

I have the 4.0L with an auto and if I drive "good" I can even get almost 20 mpg. But when you don't care about the speed limit like me, you get like 16
