Question Should i buy it? Help please

ok so my friends selling a 1990 ford ranger 2.9l ext cab 2wd. The trucks body/interior is in great condition and it ran good just idleing.. but the valve cover gasket needs to be replaced.. but i can get this truck for 500 $. im only 17 years old and i dont know a whole lot about vehicles. i was just wondering if there is anything i can look at to find out if it has any major problems.. im realy wanting this truck and it looks realy good im just nervous about buying something and having it break down on me. or having something go wrong with it.. i can handle any repairs up to 500 dollars because im on a low bugjet.. but if anyone thinks this deal would be good or if there are any things i should check on it please tell me. Im totaly lost on this.. so could you guys please give me your opions and tell me what you think. Thanks so much guys! i realy appreciate it

If I had to do it all over again, I would've NEVER bought my 1989 Ranger with the 2.9 engine. That engine is a junk design if you ask me. I went through 5 cylinder heads on it, and two radiators from the compression making them leak (I'd guess), then swapped it out for a Jasper rebuilt. Now it has another cracked head.

Your luck may be better than mine.

Since the truck is 500$ and you said you could afford $500 in repairs then maybe you should look at something road worthy and in decent repair in the 1200-1500$ range and try and talk them down to $800-$1000. I know you're young and excited to get your first set of wheels but you should spend some time looking for the right vehicle so you don't get stuck with someone elses problem. Good on ya for signing up here to do some research. Keep your eyes open and look around lots... As my father always says "There is ALWAYS a deal"

x2 on the 2.9, I had an 89 that thing was always letting me down, besides the fuel mileage sucked ass on that thing, got like 12mpg, but it also had issues, If I were you I would save up some coin and pick up a reg cab 4cyl. 2.9 v6 vs 2.3/5 4cyl...Id take the 4 poper, good on gas, easy to work on. not much difference in dispacment. something like that would be a good starter truck for someone your age and driving exp.
